The Mid-Coast Maine Field Trial Club held its spring quail trial on May 6-7. This year we were fortunate enough to have two full days of running.
On a cool start on Saturday, we took to the woods first thing with Puppies. Taking the blue ribbon was Gerry PM (Flewelling) with Tilly BRIT F (Sinclair) taking the red and Wild Apple Hazelnut PF (Doherty) taking the yellow. A fun group of dogs who also encountered a few grouse and woodcock on their runs.
With the temperatures warming, the Shooting Dog's took to the woods. Drawing a strong field of 21 dogs, there was plenty to look at. Taking first was PeeDee PF (Joyal) with a real fancy run and multiple finds. Setters took over the after that with Bandit ESF (Cullen) taking second going hard and also scoring on multiple birds. Rounding out the placements was Sam ESM (Townsend) doing what he does, run a steady strong race with good bird work. With sickness and injuries, it was really enjoyable watching both John and Laird not only run their dogs, but also put a ribbon on them.
With the sun swinging quickly to the west, the Derby's had their chance to shine. In her first trial season, Ellie ESF (London) has not been afraid of getting it done. Ellie, taking another blue ribbon, is a pleasure to watch, stylish and works the pocket. Solid on her birds, Trevor has developed her right. Taking the red ribbon was Rebel PM (Ogilvie). Apparently stinky quail wasn't his thing, so he went out and pointed a woodcock. Third place went to Gerry PM (Flewelling). Through strong breeding and work, this puppy has developed quickly and earned the placement with multiple finds and good composure around his game.
Day two started about the same. Cool to warm with a full day of dogs. As usual, the second day starts with the gundog. This year we had 10 dogs go to the line. Coming out on top was Doug Forgrave's ESM Jackson. Taking second was Warren Richardson with ESF Liv, Mark Kingsbury with his PF Finn, and rounding out the placements was Donald Henderson with his Brittany Elmer.
Up next was the shooting dogs. Another strong field of dogs took to the line. When the smoke cleared, Bob Little took the blue ribbon with his female pointer Remi. Al Robbins took home the red ribbon with his young female pointer Lottie. Jack McNulty's setter Mac took home the yellow ribbon. Finishing up the day and a fun full weekend was the derbies. Trever London once again took home the blue with Ellie, Mike Flewelling second with Gerry and Donald Henderson third with Tilly.
I would like to thank all the participants in this year's trial. We had a good weekend draw and it made for good dog work and plenty of laughs. We are very thankful for our friends traveling from New Brunswick, Quebec, Vermont, New Hampshire, and northern Maine to join in on the fun. A thank you goes out to our bird planters, Mark and Nick Kingsbury. Finally thank you to the judges, dog wagon drivers, and landowners. Enjoy your summer and hope to see everyone in the fall.
