The Spencer Farms Field Trial Club held its eighth annual field trial on October 21-22 in Milton, Florida.
Over the past 12 years, Jim Spencer has spent countless hours grooming these grounds for the purpose of providing a venue to host field trials. He has opened these grounds to both American Field and AKC field trial venues, and the field trial community is grateful for Jim Spencer's continued generosity.
The field trial attracted 12 participants who brought 47 entries that were provided for two full days. We are thankful for the following participants who were in attendance and continue to support this trial: Junior Sims, Robert Thomas, Jim and Mary Ann Womack, Katie Lyons, Tom Hennes, Jesse Brown, Michael Martino, and Bobby Dubose. Also, we were glad to have the following field trial veterans on their first visit to our field trial: Joe and Tricia Rentz, Darron Hendley, and Jeff Gilbertson.
The grounds were well groomed, and water tubs were placed strategically on the course, and the dogs took advantage of them under these warm and dry conditions. Ron Taylor was on hand with the assistance of Cleve Rhodes to release birds after each brace.
Hall of Famer Fred Rayl and his bride Inday, along with daughter Winnie Jean Martino and grandson Hardy, were on hand to staff the dog wagon and get dogs to the line.
The judges for the trial were Tom Hennes, Katie Lyons, Michael Martino, Scott Phipps, and Junior Sims. Their decisions were well received.
Cleve and Nancy Rhodes were on hand, keeping the cooler full of cold refreshments and providing the meals. Pastries and grilled sausages were provided each morning. Lunches were a selection of ham, roast beef, and turkey sandwiches with all the trimmings. Saturday evening, all enjoyed a fish-fried dinner. Thanks to Cleve and Nancy Rhodes for the great meals.
The Spencer Farms field trial of 2023 was a successful trial, and we look forward to next year's trial in 2024.
On a somber note, Jim Spencer became seriously ill the day before the trial and had to be admitted to the hospital. Jim is slowly on the mend. All of us in attendance have Jim and family in our thoughts and prayers.
