The Chickahominy Field Trial Club ran our fall trial with a return to Hunt's Shooting Preserve near Jarrett, Virginia, the last weekend in October. The weather was clear and sunny with temperatures near highs for October here in southern Virginia. The temperatures at times were trying, as they say, "to both man and beast." Our entry numbers were low, but the quality was high. Our trial chairwoman, Sharon Townley, did a great job putting together a trial enjoyed by everyone who came and ran dogs and those who came as spectators to watch.
Dennis Kivikko brought Pat Brooks's gallery wagon, and Lewis Brothers, Dennis, and others used Mert Jones's pickup to pull it. Courses were set up that provided open edges and piney woods for handlers to show their dog at their best. Dany Gooch, our faithful bird planter, kept the course stocked with birds where a dog could show well.

Our chairwoman, Sharon, was joined by Phil Rutter to judge the puppies, and Grace Ann Lawson and Terry McCormick judged the Dave Pomfret Memorial Shooting Dog Stake. On Sunday, Harold Schultz was joined by Jim Jones to evaluate the horseback shooting dogs. We appreciate these folks coming to be with us and giving their time, and their horse's time, to evaluate the performance of the dogs.

Our puppy stake consisted of three puppies, all of which were from the same high-bred litter. The top side shows Amos Mosley breeding, while the bottom side is from Shadow Oak Bo stock. Sharon and Phil named Steve Moore's female pup first, while Dennis Kivikko's male pups, Jed and Slim, finished second and third consecutively. Watch out for these three 7-month-old pups in the future!

Fifteen dogs were drawn for the Dave Pomfret Memorial Shooting Dog stake, and the heat had come to climb by the time the shooting dogs were called to the line. Judging the stake were Terry McCormick and Grace Ann Lawson. Your reporter would like to thank Judge Grace Ann Lawson for her description of the winner's performances: "The winner of the Dave Pomfret Memorial Shooting Dog stake was Mavis, a female pointer handled by Jameson Crandall. Mavis ran in the heat of the day following the lunch break. She was forward and powerful, scouring two stylish finds and a divided find, finishing strong.
"Second went to Charmer, a female setter handled by Ashby Morgan. Charmer showed an attractive style of running, hunted hard, and scoured three nice finds.
"Molly, a pointer female handled by Lee Flanders, placed third. Molly stayed to the front and had two stylish finds."

Sunday's Running
Thirteen dogs had been drawn for the AVFTC Horseback Shooting Dog stake. In the saddle were judges Jim Jones and Harold Schultz, who judged the dogs. The weather was sunny with rising temperatures. Thanks for Jim Jones's descriptions of the winners' performances: "First place went to Spice, a pointer female owned and handled by Jeff Smith with a forward-searching race. Spice exhibited good manners on her finds and finished to the front.
"Second went to Josie, a pointer female with a find, a good back, and a strong finish. Josie is owned and handled by Larry King.
"Ruger, a setter male, owned by Sharon Townley and Phil Rutter and handled by Sharon Townley, took third with a couple of finds and a forward race. All dogs did a good job despite the warm temperatures and bright sun."
Thanks to all who came, and we hope to see you in the spring.
