The Southern Field Trial Club once again hosted its Masters Amateur Classics at Burnt Branch Plantation in Ochlocknee, Georgia. Eddie and Carole Sholar graciously shared their high-quality hunting venue with all that came to this historic trial.
Unselfish is a word that comes to mind when you mention the Sholars, and they share only the best. The three one-hour courses are a mix of large fields with long edges as well as many carefully gridded acres among the mature piney woods. Their bird program features a very large prerelease of quail that renders all dogs ample opportunities to contact game. Multiple finds with strong flying coveys were common during all stakes.
The Burnt Branch team features Greg Shepherd, who is heavily involved in burning and blocking the grounds also marshaled during the trial. Also in the field was Kojack Wynn, who has worked on this property for years. He knows our game and is helpful in many ways.
Greg's wife, Ashley Shepherd, is very much involved in the hospitality side of things at Burnt Branch, and she is delightful.
Long-time Southern Field Trial Club members Tim Moore and Woody Watson wore many hats, and they put it all together in the most cheerful manner. Tim's wife, Polly, offers support in many ways.
Enough cannot be said about the culinary bounty prepared and shared at this trial. Sausage biscuits were available after the first brace. Carole and Ashley work together seamlessly to offer wonderful lunches.
The pi ce de r sistance was a special quail supper. Eddie is an avid wild quail hunter, and he saves the birds harvested on a number of wild bird quail plantations throughout southwest Georgia. Not only sharing such a prized meal with his friends at this trial, but Eddie is also a gourmet cook of quail. He explained in detail his manner of preparation, and everyone enjoyed a special evening.
The Club is grateful to Eddie Sholar and Woody Watson for judging the Amateur Derby. The Dan Bateman Amateur All-Age was evaluated by Tim Moore and Jesse Graffam. Rounding out the judicial panel were Kent Cantrell and Cecil Rester for the Roy Clarke Amateur Shooting Dog stake. The placements follow.
