Amateur Shooting Dog Winners (front, l-r): Brian Peterson with Southern Shadows T Rex, Lance Servais with Southern Shadows Wave, and Bubba Spencer with Cocklebur Breaking Bad. (Behind): Mike Small (judge) and Kent Walker.

The Carroll County Field Trial Club sponsored and hosted the running of their annual Amateur Stakes at the club headquarters owned by David Williams near Huntingdon, Tennessee, November 15-19. The five days of running contested the skills of 22 shooting dogs, 21 all-age entries, and 18 derbies.

Southern Shadows T Rex, owned by Lance Servais and handled by Brian Peterson (both of Cecil, Alabama), won the Shooting Dog stake, which was run November 15 and 16. Phillips Linebacker, owned by Orrin Ingram from Franklin, Tennessee, and Nathan Phillips from Oakland City, Indiana, won the All-Age stake. He was handled by Mike Small from Evansville, Indiana. Haney's Last Call, owned and handled by Chris Cagle from Woodlawn, Tennessee, won the Derby competition.

The weather was almost too nice part of the time for field trialing, meaning that weather that is perfect for people can be rather hot for the competing dogs. Yet, in spite of some warm periods and one short-lived little sprinkle, the weather was great.

Even better than the weather was the condition of the three courses over which the dogs hunted. As usual, David Williams had the condition of the grounds in outstanding order. Birds were abundant on each of the courses, and dry weather in the weeks preceding the field trial enabled the grounds to be easily traversed.
Sportsman's Pride was the sponsor of the stakes, and their continuing generous support was acknowledged and much appreciated.

SHOOTING DOG WINNERS
Mike Small from Evansville, Indiana, and Mason Ashburn from Trenton, Tennessee, served as judges and carefully watched the 22 shooting dog entries. Their placements were as follows:
Southern Shadows T Rex won first place under the whistle of Brian Peterson. Both Rex and the second-place winner of this stake were owned by Lance Servais. Rex won as he hunted the first hour course on Thursday morning in an excellent manner appropriate for a shooting dog and scored two finds for his handler. He was strong and stylish throughout his hour of competition.

Southern Shadows Wave won second for Servais, also on the first hour course, as he competed in the first brace on the first morning. Part of the first quarter hour of his running was a bit ragged, but then he got it together and smoothly produced three excellent finds to earn his well-deserved placement.

Cocklebur Breaking Bad, handled by Bubba Spencer and scouted by Amy Spencer, won third. He hunted the second hour course, handled the flush, and shot well while producing birds one time on the first afternoon of running.

Phillips Linebacker won first place with his impressive four finds during the seventh brace, which was run over the third hour course located on Williams' property called the Vickers Farm. He continued his outstanding winning ways as he performed beautifully for Mike Small, with a strong and forward race, complemented by great style, energetic lick, and impressive tail throughout the hour.

David Russell handled Como Thunder to win second place. David, from Como, Mississippi, co-owns this winner with Doug Arthur, Billy Blackwell, and his wife, Rachel. The 4-year-old pointer had two independent finds plus a divided find during his effort. He covered the course with great all-age savvy and looked excellent on his game each time he stood.

Third place was won by Storm's End, handled by Jim Pendergest from Lexington, Kentucky, and owned by Matt Pendergest and Megan Henry. Storm's End sported a good tail and looked pretty running as she produced two excellent finds for her handler.

THE CARROLL COUNTY TEAM
While it takes a village to raise a child, it takes a team to put on a great field trial. This was a great field trial, thanks to the efforts of the Carroll County Team. First and foremost, David Williams worked year-round to make sure his grounds were outstanding. Next came Gary McKibben, who kept all the paperwork and money in good order, plus helped with birds and everything else that came up. During these stakes, Danny Stanfill, Phillip Barnett, and John Burrow manned the dog wagon and provided security at road crossings. Lisa and Scott Little worked early and cleaned the clubhouse and houses used by the judges and others. Jim and Charlotte Atchison shopped, stocked the clubhouse and prepared lunch and some evening meals, assisted by Michelle Clark and Angie Williams as their schedules permitted. The team not only got the work done, but they genuinely enjoyed each other's company and had a good time, as well. So, as they departed on Sunday, November 19, the team felt they had once again put on another successful amateur field trial on Smyrna Road in Carroll County.
