Winners of the Brock and Wells Shooting Dog (l-r): Tom Griffin with Battle Born Bett, Jim Wolthuis with Windjammer's Gem, Corey Beadley with Augustus Elwood Beadle, joined by participants.

Hornitos Ranch was home to a wonderful weekend of competition, fun, family, and friendships. Thanks to the continued generosity of the Ichord family, a newly renovated barn, and the hard work of the Kelly family, the event was a complete success!

The weekend was even more special due to the return of long-time field trial stalwarts Torben Hansen and Paul and Wanda Wells. Let's just say that the reminiscing and laughter were enjoyed by all who attended. With the backdrop of California's gorgeous foothills, the festivities began Friday morning with the Brock-Wells Shooting Dog stake. In the judges' saddle were two extremely knowledgeable and respected field trial veterans, Jarry Walton of Reno, Nevada, and Sean Kelly of Loomis, California. Fifteen starters came to the line, and in the end, the following three performers received the top honors. Tom Griffin and his talented Battle Born Bette (ESF) took top honors with a classy shooting dog race and multiple pieces of top-notch birdwork. Second place saw longtime professional Sheldon Twer and his charge Windjammer's Gem (GSHF), owned by Terry Zygalinski of Watsonville, California, finish the half hour with a wide shooting dog race and a stylish find. The final placement went to the event's long-distance traveler, Corey Beadle of Henderson, Nevada, and his stylish black and white pointer, Augustus Elwood Beadle. Gus ran a solid shooting dog race with multiple finds.
At the conclusion of the Brock-Wells, the Mike Geenan Derby began with a nice 14-dog entry of youngsters. Tom Griffin of Esparto, California, and Jim Rose of Clayton, California, were in the saddle to judge. Marc Cuneo of Sonoma, California, took the top two spots with Boonville Rose (PF) and I. B. Diamond (PF). Both females ran true all-age races, with Rose grabbing top honors because she was a little more extreme and a touch classier on the ground. I'm sure the judges had to talk out these two performances. Third place went to Sean Kelly's 10-month-old pointer male, Kelly's IB Purdy. Purdy handled the country with power and amazing grace but lacked the consistency needed to overtake the girls.

Region 11 Amateur All-Age Championship
This year's championship saw 14 entries compete for top honors. John Keel of Fresno, California, and Jim Wolthuis of Sacramento, California, were tasked with officiating the competition, and in the end, their decision was well received.
This year's champion is the ever-present multiple-time champion Kelly's Rebel Louie. At 9 years old, Louie shows no signs of slowing down; if anything, he is stronger than ever! Louie ran the hour to the absolute extreme that the ranch has to offer, yet worked with owner/handler Sean Kelly throughout. His birdwork was independent and intense, with incredible style. In the end, the overall power and speed on the ground with a huge finish left little doubt in the judges' minds that they had their winner.
Runner-up honors went to Rocking J's Amy and her owner/handler Jarry Walton. Amy took on the country with a fire and passion that only a true all-age dog possesses. Her performance consisted of multiple pieces of quality all-age birdwork and a powerful race that was only hindered by a minor difference in her finish from that of our champion. It should also be noted that Kelly's I B Butler and Brock Force, both handled by Sean Kelly, had nice performances.

The Region 11 Amateur All-Age Derby Classic brought the weekend's performances to a close. Eight entries came to the line for judges Sheldon Twer and Jim Rose to sift through. When it was as said and done, three 10-month-old littermates took top honors. Boonville Rose (Cuneo) took first place with a strong, forward, consistent ground race. Kelly's IB Purdy (Kelly) was an extremely close second with a similar performance to Rose, and Rocking J's Billy (Walton) took third place with a little less consistent performance than his siblings. Side note: This litter has four pups with field trial homes, and all four now have received 6 of the 9 All-Age Derby placements in Region 11 this year.
