The Virginia Amateur Field Trial Club held its annual trial over the late Dr. Aubrey Morgan's Cutawhiskie farm in St. John, North Carolina November 30 through December 3. Moving what had been a late March date to a late November start in 2023 proved to be the right thing to do, as the trial was supported by a banner number of entries.
Weather for the trial was chilly for the first two days, clear and cold with frost in the mornings. Rain showers moved in on Saturday as the temperature moderated, and Sunday provided a warm, cloudy finish.
The course was muddy in some of the fields that had been disced but not as bad as some had anticipated. Rains came a week before the trial and ended what had been a hot, dry spell.
Judging the trial were Jim Jones of Gloucester, Virginia and Larry Cox of Randleman, North Carolina. Both judges have completed numerous assignments in major stakes, and we were very fortunate to secure their services. Lee Flanders of Surry, Virginia, filled in for Jim Jones on Sunday for the Open All-Age stake.
Outside of the dogs, food is a primary focus for the club. Barbel Fetkoter makes sure there is an ample supply for three squares a day, and she was assisted by Skip Brown's annual chicken barbeque. Larry King's dinner Saturday night in honor of last year's Amateur All-Age winner, Alibi Girl, was a fine event enjoyed by all. Gary Ansell chipped in with a bushel of oysters, and John Stolgitis brought up some Rhode Island mussels that were a big hit as well.
The Club welcomed a number of first-time participants. Grace Ann Lawson ran several competitive entries, as did Robert Spillman. Pete and Chris Del Collo ran their strapping Sugarknoll White Lightning. Ashby Morgan also ran a dog or two and got a placement in the Open All-Age.
The 30-minute Verle Farrow Puppy Classic was topped by Kyle Whitfield's setter male, Whitehall's Fleetwood Mac, with a smooth edge running race. Crazy Mountain Pearl, a setter female handled by David Huffine, was a close second with a good forward race just off the edges. Gary Miller's pointer female, Elvira, ran a forward hunting effort to round out the placements.
The Parke Brinkley Amateur Derby Classic was won by Gary Winall's pointer male, Mohawk Mill King Pen, with one find and a forward edge running race. Second was another of Gary's dogs, pointer male Mohawk Mill Patriot, which also had one find and a good ground effort. Gary Miller's pointer female, Miss Lucille, was forward and snappy on the ground to take third.
The one-hour Amateur All-Age stake drew 18 dogs and proved to be very competitive. Gary Winall's pointer male, Mohawk Mill Jacked Up, narrowly edged out his bracemate, Whitley Stephenson's pointer male, Southpoint's Speedy G, in the 7th brace. Jacked Up had an extremely strong ground race. Found on point at 12, he was gone some showing to the front and impressively taking in the back fields. At 52, he was again found on point and finished strongly. Speedy G was also impressive, with a huge opening cast. His scorecard showed a covey find at 20 and a woodcock find at 40. Mohawk Mill Good Advice, a pointer male handled by Gary Winall, was third with finds at 15, 55, and 59.
Mohawk Mill King Pen was the class of the Open Derby. His race was forward and sometimes extreme. He was gone at time and found on point at 38. Second place was awarded to Chasehill Snoop Dog, a pointer male handled by John Stolgitis with a broke covey find at 9 and a very good ground effort. David Huffine's setter male, Sweet Grass Spike, had a broke find at 17 and a back at time, coupled with a good race to take third.
In the Open All-Age, Mohawk Mill Good Advice, a pointer male handled by John Stolgitis had a fast, classy race punctuated by finds at 7, 13, 20, and 28. I Dream of Jeannie, Kyle Whitfield's setter female, was all class with finds at 20 and 27 for a well-deserved second. Ashby Morgan handled pointer male Mohawk Mill Big Stuff to third place with a find at 20 and a divided find at 25.
