On December 2, 2023, the Northern New Jersey Field Trial Club held its annual winter trial at Indian Creek Shooting Preserve in Hardyston, New Jersey. The weather was mild for this time of year, and both dogs and handlers were excited to get out and enjoy the beautiful day and grounds. Trialers from Connecticut, South Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Massachusetts joined us, making for a perfect get-together to celebrate the upcoming holiday season! The first running of the day was the Open Derby stake. Taking third place was the all-enthusiastic "Waffles" for owner/handler Jason Paternostro. Claiming the second spot with two finds was Tattle Tailer for owner Elias Richardson, with Tim Cavanaugh as handler. Capturing the top spot was Indian Creek Pearl Jam with a powerful forward race, scoring one find for handler Garry Malzone.

The Open Shooting Dog kicked off next, with all states mentioned above having representation. Indian Creek Courageous Cat took third for owner Ed Marron. Erin's Deja Vu captured the second spot with four very impressive finds and a forward race for owner Joe Link, who was there watching the show! Rounding out the placements was Indian Creek Sprout, with four impressive finds, topping it off with a limb find at finish. All dogs were handled by Garry Malzone.

The Amateur Shooting Dog proved to be the most fun of the day! Grandfather/grandson duo Tim and Gabriel Cavanaugh battled it out on the field. Claiming third place was Ms. Antebellum for owner/handler Tim Cavanaugh. "Jenny" had an impressive find on a meandering chukar right off the breakaway, setting the stage for a very nice performance. Placing second above his grandpa, Gabe Cavanaugh took the red ribbon home with Little Miss Bella having two finds and a back, all handled expertly by this youngster! The blue ribbon went to Little Miss Margaret, handled by Tim Cavanaugh with nice reaching moves and perfect birdwork; she was hard to deny! Congratulations to the Cavanaugh family on a great weekend! Gabe was the highlight of the trial, assisting with dogs, helping plant birds, and providing enough energy for all of us to attempt to keep up with. Thank you, Gabe, for your hard work and for making us all smile!

Thank you to our judges, Brian and Kerri Wieland of Hawley, Pennsylvania, and Tim Cavanaugh. It's always a pleasure seeing old friends, especially when they bring you new ones!
