The 2023 Hell Creek Trials began on Friday, October 27, at the Hell Creek Wildlife Management Area in Blue Mountain, Mississippi. The Mississippi Department of Wildlife Fisheries and Parks had the grounds in great shape, notably Mr. Jack Griffin, who did all the mowing. We would also like to thank Sportsman's Pride for their sponsorship and dedication in making this and many other field trials possible. We would also like to thank Mr. Keith Richardson with the German Shorthair Club for the generous donation of heavy-duty rubber mats for the steel bridge crossing on Course 3. Everyone who has been across this bridge knows it was a much-needed improvement. Thanks also to Mrs. Lisa Little for driving the dog wagon when I was unavailable.
Amateur Stakes
The weather wasn't on our side for the amateur stakes. Extreme drought conditions, with temperatures rising to the mid-80s each afternoon, made it difficult for everyone. This is the first year we didn't get enough entries to have an Amateur All-Age stake, most likely due to the terrible ground conditions. We started with the Amateur Derby with a great entry of 22 for judges Korry Rinehart and Brad Kennedy. Placing first was Cocklebur Ranger Danger, owned by Bubba, Amy, and Colt Spencer and handled by Amy. Second place was Coldwater Crackerjack, owned and handled by Gary McKibben, and third place went to Southern Sweets Lane, owned by Lance Servais and handled by Lowry Strickland. This was also Lowry's first time placing a dog. All placements had birdwork and good ground races to secure their spots.
The Jimmy Dale Downs Memorial Amateur Shooting Dog drew 16 for judges Korry Rinehart and Hunter Clark. Brian Peterson took first and second with Southern Shadows T Rex and Southern Ritz Lane. Taking third was Warioto's White Boy Rick for Scott Little.
