MEDFORD, N. J. -- The English Setter Club of America conducted its fifth annual special Lee Bird Classic fund-raising trial over the weekend of June 3rd to June 6th on the club's historical grounds at Medford, N. J. The trial drew a very good entry with a full slate of running each day.

The weather man had predicted some thunder showers over weekend with the increasing warmer temperatures, but it turned out to be pretty nice but getting a little warmer each day during the running and all the club program and festivities went off without much of a hitch. There was only a thunder shower on one day that caused a delay in one stake before we were able to finish the running. I believe all enjoyed themselves and had a great time winning some stakes and taking some prizes home along the way, besides the great food served up by Nancy and Karen Lordi and Stacey Goodie during the day and each night of the trial.

The club would thank Karen Lordi for chairing the trial again this year. The club also thanks Stacie Goodie for getting the judges and Jeff Drogin for helping with the results and paperwork for the trial. Bird planters are very important and Matt Basilone, Stacey Goodie, Aidan Mulvey, John Frank, and Mike String did an excellent job. Also, we would like to thank our Professionals, Matt Basilone, Barry Bollinger and Mike Tracy for their continued support. It was some a big effort and thanks go to all for another successful event.

The club would also like to thank Purina and the many sponsors that donated to make this trial a great fund-raising event. Especially Purina for supplying dog food to all the winners.

The Open judges were Stacey Goodie, Robert Spillman, John Frank and John Perry. The Amateur Shooting Dog stake was judged by Barry Bollinger and Joann Perry. Finally, the Special Lee Bird Open Shooting Dog Classic for Setter club members only was judged by Brian Frattaroli and John Perry. The club thanks all our judges for their work and time in the saddle and their decisions were well received.

THE WINNERS

The Open Restricted Shooting Dog started things off on Thursday morning. Taking first place was Miller's Million Dollar Penny, white and orange pointer female, owned by Bill and Muriel Primm of Cream Ridge, NJ and handled by Mike Tracy. Penny ran in the third brace and scored twice on quail, coupled with an attractive classy forward race. Second was Stich, pointer male, also owned by the Primm's and handled by Mike Tracy. Stich also had two nice stands and a good race. Third went to Bull Finch, white and liver pointer female, again owned by the Primm's along with Karen and Ernie Saniga. Stella as she is called had also two finds on quail and a nice back of brace-mate.

Smoke 'N' Mirrors, white and liver pointer female, owned by Stacey Goodie of Tabernacle, N.J., and handled by Matt Basilone, had a standout performance to win the Open Shooting Dog Stake over a nice entry of twenty dogs. "Frankie" scored nicely on two finds coupled with a showing it off big edge running strong forward race. Ravenwood Charley, owned by Joe Cincotta of Stockton, N.J., also handled by Matt, had a real nice performance of her own with two of her real standup style on point finds and a very good classy race. Iron Bully, white and liver pointer male, owned by Muriel and Bill Primm and Ernie and Karen Saniga and handled by Mike Tracy, was third with a real good seven-find and back of bracemate performance. It was a good stake with many nice efforts.

The Open Derby was cancelled due lack of entries this year.

Saturday morning opened with the Amateur Shooting Dog. Little Winged Inked Up, owned and handled by George (Bo) Mamounis of Newfield, N.J., won the stake with a very good performance. Earl, a pointer male, ran in the third brace and scored nicely with four stylish finds and a good back of bracemate. Taking second was Harbor City Sure Shot, pretty moving pointer female owned by Karen Lordi and Richard Gillis. "Sadie," ably handled by Marcus Ramseur, ran an impressive forward race and had three nice stands with a back. Third was All American Honky Rock, or Hank, as he is called, setter male, owned by Lenny Puchliakow of Vineland, N.J., and capably handled by Bo Mamounis. Hank had a real good four find effort and a nice forward hunting effort to get the nod this day.

The winner was Iron Will Suzie, pointer female, owned and handled by Bob Brooks of Hammonton, N. J. Taking second was Waybetter Bobby, pointer male owned and handled by Bobby Verderosa of Robbinsville, N. J. Braced together, Suzie scored first on a find at end of breakaway with Bobby backing. A divided find followed and then a find in bird field area with Suzie doing the back. Bobby had a third find near end. They both finished strong with Suzie getting the nod.

Winner of continental dog category was Flyin F's Duke Wyatt for owner/handler John Frank. Runner-up Pineland's Super Fly for Stacey Goodie. Both had some real nice finds with Duke getting the nod for having a nice, wide, edge-running race.
