Open Shooting Dog (l-r): Donnie Abernathy Jr, John Clough, Barry Stumbo (judge), Scott Luther (judge), Gary Vitali with Vitali Grouseringer Shiner, Terry Boatright, Darien Turner, James Kleve with Boatright's Maverick, Mark Smith, Jonathan Dunn with Island Dancer, Marla Stockrahm, and Brian Stockrahm.

The East Kentucky Field Trial Club held its annual fall trial at the Central Kentucky WMA near Berea, Kentucky, on November 16th and 17th. Entries were plentiful, providing a full weekend of running. Several new faces were in attendance in addition to the usual Berea crowd. Seeing new faces is always refreshing; we hope to see them again! The weather was phenomenal, with temperatures in the upper 50s on both days. Judicial responsibility fell to field trial veterans Scott Luther of Marshall, North Carolina, and Barry Stumbo of Versailles, Kentucky.

Both judges were very attentive to the dogs, and their years of experience showed throughout the trial. We can't thank them enough for dedicating their time to judge this event for us.

The Open Shooting Dog was highly competitive, with 14 entries. First place went to Gary Vitali's English Setter male, Vitali Grouseringer Shiner. "Shiner" had a strong forward race, always to the front, and a very stylish find near time. Second place went to a handsome English Setter male Boatright's Maverick, owned by Terry Boatright and handled by James Kleve. "Ricky" had a powerful forward race coupled with a classy find. Third place was English Setter female Island Dancer, owned and handled by Jonathan Dunn. "Millie" had one find, along with an attractive race.

The Amateur Shooting Dog Stake also had 14 entries, with many making a strong bid for a placement. Tenacee Shelby, a Pointer female, took first place for owner and handler Greg Isenberg. Her one find required a lengthy flushing attempt by Greg, and when he was unable to produce a bird, he called on Shelby to relocate, which she did perfectly. Greg was able to put the bird to flight, while Shelby displayed perfect manners and style throughout all. She went on to have an intense forward race. Blue Ridge Kobe, an English Setter male owned and handled by Mark Smith, took second place. Kobe had two polished quality finds, accompanied by a strong forward race. Kelly Shepherd's English Setter Male, Kelly's Rainbow Roy, was awarded third place. Roy had three handsome finds, along with a nice forward race.

Sunday morning found the Open Derbies running with ten entries. Mike Bandos' Llewellin Setter male, Banditos' Bandit, topped the field with four finds and several nice forward casts to round out his race. Second place went to Tenacee Stella, a Pointer female owned by Greg Isenberg. Stella was forward-going and also had two very nice finds. James Kleve handled the third-place dog, Setter Ridge Power Play, an English Setter male owned by Brad Peterson, with one find and a nice race.

The Open Puppy stake also had ten entries. The first and second place dogs were braced together with Boatright's Renegade, an English Setter male handled by James Kleve, owned by Terry Boatright, taking first and Kris Hammons handling her husband Tim's Irish Setter male, SC Wild Bud, to second place. Both dogs were extremely stylish with big forward races. Third place was awarded to a very stylish and strong running English Setter male, Crouse's Grouse Feather, handled by James Kleve and owned by father-daughter duo MS Schalk and MD Crouse.

As with any field trial, the list of people deserving of thanks is vast. Firstly, Kelsey Kleve and Donna Boatright deserve recognition for providing lunch each day for the crowd. Our friends at Purina provided dog food for our winners and gifts for our judges; these contributions are much appreciated. Thanks to everyone who entered a dog, scouted, drove a dog wagon, loaned a horse, the list goes on and on. It takes more than a few to make a trial run smooth and we sure had a great group at this trial.
