The 2024 Hell Creek trials ran on Friday, October 25, at the Hell Creek Wildlife Management Area in Blue Mountain, Mississippi. The Mississippi Wildlife Fisheries and Parks staff had the grounds in good shape. We are very thankful for all that the MDWFP staff do for field trials at Hell Creek and were pleased to have Mr. Justin Hughes and Mr. Austin Prestage, MDWFP biologists, on hand and ride a brace along with Ms. Lauren Wooley and Mr. Harrison Bell, who is area manager at Hell Creek. As always, Mr. Jack Griffin was on hand to man the road crossings and chip in where needed. Also, we want to thank Sportsman's Pride for sponsoring this trial. Gift cards for dog feed were given to each placement in the Amateur stakes. These cards are always well received by the winners. We greatly appreciate everyone's support for this trial.

Amateur Stakes
Judges for the Amateur stakes were Greg Tapp of Somerville, Tennessee, and Hunter Clark of Ethel, Mississippi. We thank them for the time and attention given to each competitor. The conditions for the running were unseasonably warm, accompanied by extreme drought, making it tough on the competitors. Twelve dogs came to the line in the Amateur All-Age. Taking the top spot was Como Thunder, Pointer male owned and handled by David Russell. Second place went to Coldwater Crackerjack, owned and handled by Gary Mckibben. The first and second-place dogs were braced together in the last brace and credited with two find each and good races. Placing third was Rebel Maid, owned and handled by David Williams. Maid had one find and a good race to secure her spot.

The Amateur Derby had 19 starters. Placing first was Southern Shadows T-Bone, second place went to Arkansas' Headliner, and third place was Como Moon Rider. They were each credited with a find and good races to secure their places.

The Jimmy Dale Downs Memorial Amateur Shooting Dog had 16 come to the line, with Brian Peterson taking a clean sweep of the placements. First was Southern Ritz Lane, second was Lester's Top Recruit, and third was Southern Shadows Kingpin. All were rewarded with one find and a well-applied shooting dog race to secure their placements.
