Our spring horseback field trial started on Tuesday, January 25, at the Sportsmen's Association Field Trial Grounds in Grovespring, Mo. The 2,400 acres of private grounds are groomed and maintained solely for field trials with feed strips lining the edges and thoughtful mowing of the courses.

Pre-released and wild coveys of quail are plentiful here; supplemental birds planted during the trial are an added bonus and aid in bringing the resident coveys back on course.

The weather was generally cold but without precipitation for the duration of the event. Fortunately, we finished the trial one day ahead of schedule because heavy snow and ice blanketed the field trial grounds as well as the entire Midwest the following night which would have made travel to next destinations impossible.

Many people and sponsors worked hard to make this year's trial a success. Burton Wice took care of all of the paperwork and trial organization. Stan Williamson made sure the quail were fed and watered. Dave Capstick, Burton Wice, Donna Janulis, Mitch Sims, and Bob Burchett drove the dog wagon. Jim Lowery planted birds. Joe Williams and Mitch Sims provided tasty meals and dog wagon snacks. Sharon Wice prepared hard boiled eggs to supplement the dog wagon snacks.

During a hunting trip to New Mexico, Julie Freeman shot an elk at 625 yards. Julie and her husband Adam generously prepared a delicious meal of elk meat lasagna, salad, garlic bread and chocolate cake for a Saturday night get together in the clubhouse.

Purina donated large bags of Pro Plan Sport dog food for the winners of the one-hour stakes as well small bags for participants. Collectively, these folks helped make this year's fall horseback field trial a huge success.
