The Cockade Bird Dog Club put on a fall trial at the Dick Cross Wildlife Management Area in South Hill, Va. The trial started on Friday morning, a warm day for bird dogs, with the Open Derby.
I cannot say thank you enough to Gary Winall for putting up with my putting this all together and the many hats he wore, Ashby Morgan for teaming the walking stake on Saturday with the horseback trial, judging, getting birds, etc., and the other judges: Jim Jones, Larry King and Sharon Townley, and especially all of the entries.
A big thank you to Sharon and Phil Townley for helping with the meals. Thursday night was ribs, coleslaw and mashed potatoes on a long table under the awning of their trailer. Friday night Phil pulled the grill back out and finished the pork chops, along with baked beans and cake, Saturday night was bring your own steak and again Phil's grill was put to work with him cooking to perfection.
Thank you to all the entries and all who helped.
OPEN STAKES WINNERS
The winners were First: Mohawk Mill Wardance, a liver and white pointer that ran hard to the front and had three finds, showing great potential as a Derby. Second: Remy Riper Wango, handled by Pat Casey had a very nice find and ran a very nice Derby race. Third: Dry Creek Ares for Jeff Smith. His race was somewhat sporadic, but one nice cast resulted in a beautiful find.
In the Open All-Age, Gary Winall was back in the winners' circle with a trifecta. Mohawk Mill Good Advice, a young dog that sailed through the country and had three finds. Mohawk Mill Knight Hawk, another young all-age dog that ran a good all-age race, was found at the cabin, after a good forward cast, for a nice find where his bracemate failed to back, interfered and he stayed broke. He had to be scouted some. And Mohawk Mill Gangster, a littermate to the second place dog. After crossing the road behind Pino's was not seen after the dam. Ellen Clements, Gary's scout, went back and called point, with Gangster well poised in a thicket with birds right where he indicated. He ran a good all-age race, but was rough at times.

The Amateur Derby, running the same day, brought Mohawk Mill Wardance to the winners' circle. He handled well, had a good race and two finds. Second was Mohawk Mill Jacked Up with a broad race, had a good find, got out of pocket, had to be brought to the front and along the way had a find. Finished going away. Third was Tommy Stargell's Bevy's White Soldier which started slow, but picked up as the brace went on. Had a nice find near the oak tree and finished well. A good performance for a promising young dog.
Sunday morning brought much better conditions after a day of rain on Saturday. First was Alibi Girl for Larry King, no stranger to the winners' circle. She ran in the last brace of the field trial and changed everything with three finds and a well run race. Second was Remchester's Taking Chances, owned by Richard Edwards and handled by Sharon Townley. This Brittany has developed into a formidable challenger in the horseback stakes. He ran a nice race had two commendable finds, birds well located, ran strong and stayed to the front finishing strong. Third was Beechwood's Samuel Colt which ran a shooting dog race with good style, was favorable to his handler and found to the front An extended flushing effort, a good relocation and birds well located, and concluded with a nice finish.
