The 2021 running of the Rend Lake Open was held for the second straight year at the Pyramid State Park Captain Unit grounds in Southern Illinois This trial ran following the All-America Championships also head at the Pyramid grounds.
Good early spring weather gave participants a comfortable time at this venue. The Rend Lake Field Trial Club appreciated the attendance and participation of the owners and handlers for this National Championship qualifying trial.
This year's judging duo was seasoned field trial veterans, Mr. Jim Lawless from Sparta, Ill., and Mr. Keith St. John of Fulton, Ky., occupying the saddles and paying close attention to the dogs in each brace.
The Open All-Age Stake drew many champions and National Champion dogs. The All- Age stake drew sixteen dogs and the Derby drew eleven.
Dog work was exceptional on somewhat altered conditions. Due to normally short and wet spring conditions that seem to be common in Southern Illinois the State of Illinois park grounds keepers made an unusual decision to utilize a dry time in early February to do some needed burning which altered some of the natural flow on all three courses this year.
Appreciation for work by the State of Illinois sometimes goes unnoticed by the field trial clubs that utilize these grounds and we would like to make sure they know how much they truly are appreciated at this time. It needs to be recognized that the Illinois is working hard to better prepare these grounds for all field trials with planned ground improvements which will give additional course area on course No. 3, autumn olive elimination, and noxious weeds control on these grounds, future trials will be even that much better.
It should also be mentioned that other improvements on these grounds have been funded with help from the field trial community through a grant from the AFTCA 20th Century Fund. These contributions have been greatly appreciated and put to good use by club that use these grounds.
With this early burning what normally would have been grounds with natural flowing lines altered areas on the courses into large areas with spot oriented obstacles. Dogs and handlers worked well together thru these areas with multiple finds and showy ground coverage.
Due to unforeseen issues, a brace-by-brace report is unavailable. It was reported by the judges that numerous dogs did outstanding jobs and that the decisions that were made were made with brace by brace discussion.
It is the Rend Lake Field Trial Clubs hope that continued attendance is possible by participants in the field trial community. If you have not been to the grounds on this venue you should come.
Accommodations are excellent and the grounds are excellent for all-age stakes.
