Haineline's Rock'n Roller Second in the Amateur Shooting Dog Stake
ORCHARDVILLE, ILL. -- Before I start this write-up, please let me apologize to those who entered dogs and those reading this article. I always try to write an article that is informative and covers each dog.

On Saturday, it rained after the first brace until we finished the day. Sometimes it was raining sideways. The reason I know this is that I was running an entry in the Shooting Dog. By the end of the day, everyone was wet and cold. Thanks to everybody, especially the judges who braved the elements.

The Winners' Classic was held on March 30-31 south of Orchardville on the Ellis Farm. The Mid-South Club is so fortunate to have this family-owned farm to hold our trials. Many different objectives are on the course for each dog in every brace. Amateur stakes were run on Saturday, the Open on Sunday.

Thanks to Ted Ellis, Linda Ellis and Bill Ellis for allowing the club to hold our trials twice a year on this spectacular property. A special thank you goes to Bill Ellis for doing all the mowing and QUGA for use of the mower and tractor.

Brad and Sherry Hargis ran the trial. To those who have not run a trial, believe me when I tell you that it is a huge job. In addition, Sherry grilled brats and hamburgers in the afternoon. Had to stay in the barn to cook and eat but a welcome break from the rain.

THE WINNERS

The Amateur Shooting Dog was won by Go Illini Butch, setter male owned and handled by Gary Matevey. Butch is a repeat winner at Orchardville. He obviously loves the course and knows where to find birds. Second was Hainline's Rock'n Roller, pointer male for Jeff Hainline. "Pete" looks to be another strong contender for Jeff in shooting dog stakes for years to come. The judges were impressed with the number of dogs in this stake that had great performances.

The Amateur Derby was won by Jeremiah Seiber's young pointer female Bullfrog's Happy Patch which ran the country searching all the likely spots for quail. Brad Hargis' Diamond Rebel was named runner-up. Both Derbies named had several bird contacts each.

The Amateur Puppy winner was Dale Smith's young pointer female Miller's Elhew Fancy Lilly. The last couple weeks had been Dale's first field trial experience. He has two very nice puppies. Hope to see him in the fall. Second place was withheld.

The Amateur Shooting dog was won by D J's Miss Ellie, pointer female for your scribe. She went on a bird-finding mission. Placed second was Covey Rize Sam, setter female for Gary Matevey.

Mike DuVall of Wisconsin swept the Open Shooting Dog placements. Pointer female Thumper's Anything But was awarded first and pointer female Winkeman's Little Sugar earned second. Both dogs exhibited forward races and broke bird work.

The Open Derby on Sunday was won by Bullfrog's Happy Patch for Jeremiah Seiber, Saturday's Derby winner. Second was Frank Christie's pointer male Illini Patch. Both Derbies were a joy to watch and judge.

The Mid-South Bird Hunters would like to thank all those who helped with the judging -- Jim Ashby, Rick Stanford, Butch Spelbring, Jeremiah Seiber, Brad Hargis and your scribe.

See everybody in the fall at a trial near you.
