PATRICK, S. C. -- The annual South Carolina Amateur Classic drew a high quality field of 21 shooting dogs with six Derbies competing for honors. These events were contested January 8-9 over the H. Cooper Black grounds located in Patrick, S. C.

Our advertised judges were Chad Adams of Goldsboro, N. C., and Reid Hankley of Thomasville, Ga. Both gentlemen are excellent horsemen and rode the perfect pace for a shooting dog trial. Chad and Reid understand the type of performance necessary to win a high caliber stake.

A special thanks to friend and ASCFTC Secretary Roger McPherson. His experience, organizational skills and positive approach to our state and sport are unparalleled.

Alvin Hurst Jr. helped release birds and pick up Subway for Saturday's lunch.

Tim Ruff is always front and center when asked to help in any manner. Our Region 3 President, Dr. Roger Deurksen's presence and sound advice elevate any function.

THE WINNERS

Nailing down first place in the South Carolina Amateur Shooting Dog Classic was Springflow's Backcountry P. Chris Catanzarite of Scenery Hill, Pa., expertly handled his Rebel-made pointer male.

Springflow's Backcountry, or Pete as he is called, gave a bold demonstration of presenting birds to the gun. On five different occassions, the handsome pointer scored on game. Pete exhibited calendar style and championship manners for the wing and shot.

Warren Parrott of Pamplico, S. C., piloted his Highrollins Gone and Doneit second. The well made white and orange pointer male is blessed with a world of style running and on point. Gunner ran a hard-driving hour always to the front. He was rewarded with four evenly spaced pieces of birdwork. The last was a true "field trial find" at pickup.

At'a Boy's Strangle Hold, owned and handled by George Kimbrell of Fort Mill, S. C., was named third. Stranglehold spun an intelligent shooting dog race, always mindful of game. This medium-sized pointer male carded four picture perfect pieces of birdwork during his bid.

Warren Parrott was back in the winners' circle taking first and third in the Derby Classic. His B K Deighton's Jewel was awared first place. "Ellie" is electrifying on the ground and just a pure bird-hunting ball of fire. The quick high-stepping pointer female had two jam-up pieces of birdwork and another handled with Derby manners. Hirollin's B K Dontjuno took third. Juno is equally exciting only needing a little more range this day. She had a corking well-handled find off the breakaway, and added two more later in the heat.

Dr. Roger Deurksen guided his bold-running pointer male High Heat to second. Heat had a field trial find just before crossing the sand road, then another minutes later just off of the path. The youngster was gathered up and rendered a spine-tingling finish.

Hats off to Nestl Purina for supporting this South Carolina event. Greg Blair is a tremendous ambassador for Purina and our sport throughout the United States. Many thanks!

The Association of South Carolina thanks all the owners, handlers and participants attending the 2021 running. We are looking forward to seeing everyone again next year!
