DANCYVILLE, TENN. -- The West Tennessee Field Trial Association started the new year off right by hosting the Amateur Shooting Dog, Amateur All-Age and the Amateur Derby over the course of four days. Mud, rain, wind, and cold weather made competitors even more determined to complete each competition. The WTFTA wants to thank all judges, dog owners, handlers, and locals for participating and supporting Region 6.

January 10 began the full weekend with the Amateur Shooting Dog. Ike Todd of Somerville, Tenn., and Quintin Wiseman of Hogensville, Ga., judged all four braces -- four pointers and four setters. Awarded first was Lester's Prime Poison Lane for owner-handler Brian Peterson of Cecil, Ala. Placed second was Little More Shine, owned by Tim and Kristine Hammons of Berea, Ky., and handled by Tim Hammons. Third was Knight Rider's Hank for owners Dale Pool of Atoka, Tenn., and Charlie Baglan of Batesville, Miss., and handled by Dale Poole.

The Amateur All-Age included 19 pointers and five setters. Judges for this trial were Tim Hammons and Quintin Wiseman. Earning first was Rebel Dreamer for owner-handler David Williams of Cordova, Tenn. Phillips Off Line, owned by Nathan Phillips of Oakland City, Ind., and handled by Mike Small of Evansville, Ind., was second. Third was Nosam's Full Ride for owner-handler Mason Ashburn of Trenton, Tenn.

The Amateur Derby was judged by Ike Todd and Tim Hammons. First was Rebel Survivor for owner-handler David Williams. Placed second was Bad Prairie's Valley Girl, owned by Quintin and Tasha Wiseman and handled by Quintin. Third was Cocklebur King Tut, owned by Bubba, Amy and Colt Spencer of Bolivar, Tenn., and handled by Bubba.

Despite the gray clouds, constant rain, and muddy fields, each handler and dog worked hard to complete each competition each day. WTFTA hosts these events with considerate hospitality by welcoming each person with a handshake, a red coal bonfire, and exceptional meals. Thank you to J. P. Hathcock and Crutcher Stoots for preparing bacon wrapped grilled chicken for dinner and hamburgers, bologna, and hot dogs for lunches; Hassell Smith, Tom Mann, and Brad Bishop for preparing delicious fried catfish, hushpuppies, and fries; Gene Spiotta for preparing chili for each lunch; and Connie Ferge for preparing the homemade blueberry, cherry, and peach pies.

Many thanks to the landowners; Bill and Allen Currie, Dr. Gene Spiotta, Larry Humber, Skip Taylor, Rich Boumeester, and Blake Kukar for allowing competitions and traditions to continue.

February 14 is the scheduled starting date for the West Tennessee Open All-Age trial. WTFTA is preparing for another successful and entertaining competition. Newcomers are always welcome to show their talents, share their experiences, eat good food, and feel right at home.
