The Lake States Field Trial Club held their summer trial on August 13-14, with weather that was better than could have been expected for August in Michigan. With temperatures in the high 60's and low 70's, this Purina sponsored event went very well.
On Saturday morning, we began our Open Shooting Dog Qualifier using courses 1-11, with a satisfying roster of 21 dogs. Ken Delong and Marc Dozeman took the honors of judging, in hopes that the birds would be plentiful. 1st place was awarded to Fireside Sally Forth - handled by Tammy Chaffee and owned by Mary B. Esser. Sally ran a strong and consistent race, sticking a woodcock at 6:00; a second at 10 that involved a very nice piece of relocation work and a third at 15:00; finishing forward. Second place went to Springpond Rockin Sidney - handled by Tammy Chaffee and owned by Leeann Parnell. Sidney was consistent and was more moderate in range. She pointed a woodcock at 16:00 with great intensity and perfect manners, finishing strong. Third place went to Moss Meadow Magic - owned and handled by Ken Moss. Magic was a little uneven at first but settled in to have a very strong brace. At 29:00 he went on point and began a very careful and deliberate but difficult relocation effort on a running woodcock. He finally put the bird to wing at 34:00 with both judges being impressed by this piece of bird work.
We also began our Open Derby stake this morning after the OSD began. Using courses 12-15, judges Mike Brown and Brendan Terrien sat in judgement with 8 dogs in the running. First place went to May's Legacy of Justice - owned and handled by Ken Delong. Freedom had a nice fast forward and powerful race with 2 nice woodcock finds. He withstood the heat thru the entire race and showed no attrition. Second place went to Hifive's on the Rocks - owned and handled by Mike Lareau. Leia had a nice consistent run, evenly handled and hunted the cover well, with one woodcock find. Third place went to Meredith Grade Penny - handled by Scott Chaffee and owned by Dennis Keysor. Penny also had a consistent run, staying to the front and handling nicely, with one woodcock find.
Saturday went long, having a few conflicting braces, and along with our event, the Ruffed Grouse Society had its 1st annual Habitat Tour and New Hunter Seminar, coordinated by Kevin Stewart. There were a few of their folks who came out in the afternoon to walk some braces to get a feel for what we trialers do in the woods. We also thank them for providing our lunch of BBQ pulled pork and all the fixin's.
On Sunday, we topped our weekend off with the Mike Grostic Amateur Shooting Dog Memorial. Richard and Harold Hollister judged our roster of 14 dogs, with a day that birds were hard to get pointed. The cover was still in full abundance and those wiley birds were quiet. After a second series call back, Tupelo Honey - owned and handled by Bob Wheelock took 1st place honors. She had a great performance on course three, running forward and hunting hard for her handler. She pointed a brood of grouse in the second series. Second place went to K Del's Eagle Magnum Hotshot - owned and handled by Ken Delong. Shooter was a bit rough, finishing with a grouse find. Third place went to Hifive's Golden Nugget - owned and handled by Mike Lareau. Dot ran and hunted fine but lacked the punch that the others had, while ending with a woodcock find.
After Sunday's running, we went back to the Alibi for lunch and announcements. Thanks to Mike and Deb Singleton for coordinating our lunch; to George and Marilyn Ferguson for providing the goodies for our coffee breaks; to Bryan Wood for his usual Stake Managing skills; to the Hollisters for wrangling their most excellent string of horses; and to all those participants and others who marshaled braces, moved cars and helped keep things moving. A big special Thank you to Purina for sponsoring this event.
