The American Quail Classic Open All-Age and Open Derby Stakes were held in Huntingdon, Tenn., on November 20-22, 2022. The Clarksville Pointer and Setter Club is extremely thankful to David Williams and Family for the use of the grounds and facilities. We also appreciate Shane Duckworth and Perry Lacy for their willingness to take on the judicial duties for both stakes, both gentlemen were very professional towards and attentive to each dog, handler and scout. We would also like to thank our dog wagon drivers John Burrow, Lebob Stanfill, and Dan Warrick for their gentle care of the canine contestants and promptness in arrival to each road crossing and breakaway. Last nut definitely not least we appreciate the sponsorship provided by Purina for this trial, they provide financial support of the advertising and bags of Purina ProPlan for the winning teams. Greg Blair is a fantastic representative of Purina to work with.
Our trial has perfect weather, cold mornings with sunshine to warm each day and no rain in the forecast. Our trial began Sunday afternoon following the completion of the Carroll County Field Trial Club's Amateur Trial. We had 20 entries for the Open All-Age stake and 18 entries for the Open Derby Stake. we were thankful for the entries as the trial runs the week of Thanksgiving when most would like to be home for family time with their families. We had professional trainers Scott Beeler, Weldon Bennett, Brody Byrd, Jamie Daniels, Larry Huffman, and Gary Lester competing their string of dogs, plus amateur handlers Marion Brown, Chris Cagle Jr., Chris Cagle Sr., and David Russell. Thank you, gentlemen, for your entries. On Tuesday, we were surprised with a visit from Ferrell Miller. He never ceases to amaze me with his enthusiasm and physical strength. May we all aspire to be riding and running bird dogs when we reach our eighties.
Garnishing first place in the Open All-Age stake was Miller's Blindsider, handled by Jamie Daniels and owner by Nick Berrong. Nick was on site to see his dog's impressive performance. Blindsider ran in the 6th brace on Monday morning, which was the 3rd hour course. He comliled a total of 5 bird finds and handled fantastically. He was always found to the front with superb style while running and when found on point. Blindsider is a 6-year-old, orange and white Pointer male out of Just Irresistible and Miller's Bringing The Heat. Blindsider set the standard by which all remaining competitors for the stake would be compared. His sire Just Irresistible has just been elected to the Field Trial Hall of Fame as of the writing of this report.
Lester's Shockwave earned the second placement in the Open All-Age stake for handler Gary Lester. The five-year-old, orange and white, male pointer is out of Ransom and Beane's Line Dancer. Lester's Shockwave is owned by Tommy and Bonnie Hamilton. He ran with exceptional style and handling with 3 finds in the seventh brace of the trial Monday afternoon on the first course. This dog continues to add placements to his outstanding career.
Two-year-old white and orange male pointer, Knight's Little John, gained the judges attention and was awarded the third placement. This impressive young dog is owned by Scott Griffin and is out of Lester's Storm Surge and Bonner's Platinum Doll. Knight's Little John had three nice finds and did a super job on the ground. This young dog has a very promising future ahead of him in the Open All-Age competitions.
Scott Beeler has been making his mark this season on the Open Derby circuit with Beeler's White Knight. The white and orange pointer male knocked out the competition in the Open Derby Stake for the first placement on Wednesday. He had multiple finds with a huge ground race while easily being called in when needed. He displayed the upmost class when running and on point. White Knight is co-owned by Scott and his father Charles Beeler. Beeler's White Knight is by Touch's Smooth Rider and Touch's Wildwood Flower.
Capturing the second placement in the Open Derby stake was Coldwater War Cry for handler Weldon Bennett and new owner Paul Melton. This exciting orange and white male pointer had three beautiful finds and a very nice All-Age race. Coldwater War Cry is out of Valiant and Coldwater Belle.
Miller's King Poast secured the third placement in the Open Derby stake with his one clean bird find and a true patterned All-Age ground race. Miller's King Poast is handled by Gary Lester for owner Jannie Chapman. His sire is Lester's Storm Surge and dam is R W Susie Q. Miller's King Post's coat color is white with orange markings on his head.
Again, we would like to thank Purina and the competitors, owners, handlers, club members, and landowners that make this trial possible!
