The Rock Springs Field Trial Club held the ABHA Western Regional Walking Shooting Dog Championship and Robert Lais Walking Derby Classic on the beautiful rolling flint hill grounds near Eskridge, Kan. The championship had a great draw of 20 dogs that competed. The Robert Lais Derby Classic had an entry of six dogs. We want to thank our landowners, Norma Jean Vilander and Sandy Jenson, who, without them and the use of their grounds, this trial would not be possible. Our sponsors, Valu-Pak and SportDOG, are very generous to us and all field trials.

Named champion was Bye Bye G G, a pointer female owned and handled by Robert (Bob) Lais. G G had a strong forward race coupled with great bird work.

The runner-up champion was Warjam's Big Mac Daddy a pointer male owned and handled by Jim Corpening. Mac also had a strong forward race coupled with great bird work.

When all was done, the judges had a callback to decide who would be champion and runner-up. So, they had the two dogs do a run-off which didn't take long to decide. G G had a find at about 3, with Mac backing; all was good. Handlers led dogs away from the find, but it was not far enough for first-year dog Mac. Congratulations to G G and handler Bob Lais. G G was on a roll as she had just won the Region 17 Walking Championship a few weeks prior.

The Robert Lais Derby Classic winner was Dexter Reddog Taylor, an Irish setter male owned and handled by Brad Taylor. This is the inaugural running of this Derby Classic, and no better fitting than to have Brad win this as he is from Wichita, as is Bob, who has helped Brad through the years. In second was Backyard Lucy, a pointer female owned and handled by Andy Neria.
