Happy Five-Year Anniversary UKC and American Field!

September 1, 2026

American Field/UKC 5 Year Anniversary

Join us in celebrating five years of honoring a legacy while investing in its future.

Since 1874, American Field ™ has meant more than a publication and the historic Field Dog Stud Book has served as more than just a dog registry.

Together, they represent a living record of remarkable dogs and a storied history of the people who shaped the sport of pointing dog field trials. They are familiar names announced at championships, printed on placements, and spoken as shorthand for one of the oldest sporting dog traditions in North America.

Five years ago, on September 1, 2021, the United Kennel Club happily accepted the responsibility of becoming the next steward of that legacy.

We recognize that a brand with so much history carries more weight than a mere transaction and holds more intrinsic value than momentary reading material. These institutions carry expectations. They represent decades of competition, sportsmanship, breeding, conservation, and a testament to the countless individuals who have devoted their lives to bird dogs and the traditions surrounding them. Our commitment has been to honor that foundation while ensuring the sport of American Field™ continues to serve pointing dog enthusiasts for generations to come.

Over the past five years, we've been busy integrating the various components of this distinguished legacy into our own ecosystem. The famed American Field ™ bird dog field trials have continued alongside the various pointing dog events of our UKC Hunting Ops Upland program. The former weekly newspaper that held the heartbeat of the sport was reconfigured into the monthly UKC Field newsletter beginning in March 2022. On January 1, 2024, UKC officially merged the famous Field Dog Stud Book (America's oldest pure-bred dog registry) into the UKC Stud Book, creating a dual privilege registry system and providing dog owners of particular field trial breeds with authentic documentation, registration, certified pedigrees, and DNA services.

And just like the sport and its stud book, the prestigious periodical had to evolve to meet the changing demands and interests of America's sporting dog owners and outdoor enthusiasts. In December of 2024, UKC revitalized and reintroduced the iconic American Field ™ publication to the sporting world, now as a quarterly editorial anthology to celebrate our shared purpose with sporting dogs through stories from across the hunting dog community from bird dogs to beagles, retrievers, hounds, and beyond.

The traditions that built the American Field ™ legacy deserve to endure. So does the opportunity to introduce new generations of hunters and sporting dog owners to what makes dogs afield so special.

Thank you to everyone who has been part of the American Field™ story, whether you've been here for five years or fifty.

This is your American Field™, and we're honored to keep moving forward with you.

An official entity of United Kennel Club (UKC), the American Field legacy, mission, and Field Dog Stud Book certified pedigree database is carefully managed by UKC for the continued betterment of field trial dogs. UKC is committed to the American Field community, and all hunters, breeders, clubs, associations, and participants.
