Field Trial Hall of Fame - 2026 Endorsements

The Field Trial Hall of Fame was established in 1954, and since then, deserving dogs and worthy field trial personalities have been elected and honored.

There are two categories of candidates -- Dogs and Persons -- and for each, a primary focus is contributions to the sport. For Dogs, the win record is significant, not just the number of wins but primarily the quality of the wins. Production record is also important, i.e., winners produced and the quality of the wins of the Dog's offspring. On occasion, a Dog has been elected to the Field Trial Hall of Fame on the merits of one of these aspects: a win record of outstanding achievement or winners produced, contributing greatly to the quality of competition.

Insofar as Persons, contributions to the sport beyond statistics, and over a lengthy period of time, all while exhibiting integrity, sportsmanship, and character. Contributions may span several facets: club official, judge, breeder, owner, handler, reporter, landowner, patron of the sport, and usually a combination of these roles. An eligible endorsee may be living or dead; if living, they must also be at least 64 years of age. In essence, the sport was made better by their participation.

It was my privilege to have bred, whelped, and started Chelsea's Thunder Bolt. His mother, Butler's Jill, was sired by Elhew Sinbad out of Pepper's Sunflower. I took the recommendation of Stephen Bell and Dr. Terry Terlep and bred her to HOF Whippoorwill Wild Agin.

Bolt was a flawless young dog. He was clean-bodied, with a perfectly marked liver head, big and powerfully gaited, with a tremendous prey drive. He naturally wanted to go with you and took pride being to the front. He was incredibly intelligent with an uncanny ability to find and point birds regardless of the conditions.

Bolt was campaigned his derby year by Steve Hurdle, winning two Open Derby stakes. After his derby season, he was sold to George Hickox and Dr. Tom Jackson to be campaigned with Shawn Kinkelaar as handler. The success this team had is well documented. Two of Bolt's championship wins stand out to me: the 2017 All-American Open Shooting Dog Championship, with nine finds on two wild bird species, and the 2020 Masters Open Shooting Dog Championship, with nine wild quail finds. No trial was over until Bolt had run!

Bolt has demonstrated his ability to reproduce his great qualities by siring 2025 NC Erin's Perfect Storm and 2025-26 Purina Top Open Shooting Dog Chelsea's Mae West, along with many other field trial winners and great hunting companions.

With a legendary field trial career and a proven ability to produce, I believe Chelsea's Thunder Bolt has earned the honor of being in the Hall of Fame.

Not long ago, the criteria for an all-age dog to be elected to the Hall of Fame were: "Did they win on the prairies and in the Deep South?" The next question was "did they produce?" Well, my endorsement is for Chelsea's Thunder Bolt, who ran his entire career as a shooting dog but has met all the requirements to be elected into the Hall of Fame and then some. I've scouted him and competed against him for most of his career, on the prairies, in the Deep South, and everywhere in between. His 23 championships may never be achieved again, which alone should get him into the Hall of Fame. But he has also successfully produced. Producing multiple champions and a National Champion along with a Top Shooting Dog of the Year, Bolt's a most deserving candidate!

As a handler, I love to see great performances. As a breeder, I look for a dog that will vastly improve my kennel. Rivertons Funseek'n Scooter handily exhibited both. Not one dog has ever made a greater impact on my kennel or success. In my kennel alone, Scooter has sired or grand-sired over 12 different champions who have won the most prestigious field trials there are. In my opinion, he is the most overlooked sire to date.

Others have pointed to 23x Ch. Chelsea's Thunder Bolt's accomplishments in the field, his production record, and Purina Award wins, no doubt, qualifying him for Hall of Fame consideration. During his long career, he won all the important Open Shooting Dog Championships from Texas to Georgia and everywhere in between...tackling different terrain, game birds, scenting conditions, etc.

Highlighting Bolt's long, impressive win career, competing against the best open shooting dogs in the country, are his 3 Invitational Championship wins. Without doubt, this stake is the least influenced by luck. As we all know, day of the trial, time of day, weather, and bracemate can greatly impact a good dog's chance of success in any given trial, particularly on wild birds. Dogs that are called back for the third day of the Invitational are expected to perform as well as, if not better than, the previous two days, demonstrating intelligence, bird sense, and endurance unimpaired by the physical and mental demands of three consecutive days of competing.

Bolt proved his worth by winning the Invitational an astounding 3 times -- in 2018, 2019, and again, just prior to his retirement, in 2022. In 2019, just 3 days after his last run in the Invitational, he won the International Endurance Shooting Dog Championship, providing proof of the dog's extraordinary stamina. (To read what others said during these runs, click here.)

Chelsea's Thunder Bolt has proven himself among the greatest shooting dogs of his era. I respectfully ask that you give this extraordinary dog your strongest consideration for election to the Hall of Fame.

Rivertons Funseek'n Scooter ("Scooter"), a 6x champion and full-time runner-up, besides his record in performing in the field, has produced many champions who are still performing at this time. Scooter was a very virtual dog; he would handle for his handler, Rich Robertson, or his owner, Matt Cloverdale, who both put championships on him. His production record, as Rich would say, is phenomenal. Some of Scooter's offspring have already been inducted into the Hall of Fame; now it's time for Scooter.

CH Chelsea's Thunderbolt "Bolt" has put together an unforgettable, legendary career both as a dominant competitor and a producing sire, proving himself a truly worthy Hall of Fame nominee. Bolt captured Open Shooting Dog championships across many distinct regions, demonstrating exceptional versatility on liberated birds, pre-released grounds, and challenging wild birds alike.

Throughout his historic career, Bolt racked up 30 Total Championship placements, including 23 Championships and 7 Runner-Up Championships, alongside multiple placements in top OSD points Classics. Nine of his most prestigious title wins came from three of the most highly revered stages in the sport: he was a 3x Champion of the US Open Shooting Dog Invitational, a 4x Champion of the Michigan OSD Championship, and a 2x Champion of the Masters OSD Championship.

These extraordinary feats paved the way for his 4x Purina Award Top Open Shooting Dog honors, cementing his status at the absolute pinnacle of the sport. Bolt's official UKC slash line stands at an impressive 42/42/220. Far more than just statistics, these numbers represent a profound impact on the breed. Among his elite offspring are numerous field trial winners, producing females, Field Champions, and most notably, National Champion Erin's Perfect Storm.

Bolt's mark in competition will stand unchallenged for years to come. Through his legacy offspring, his impact will be felt for generations.

National Champion Miller's Dialing In for Hall of Fame

"Spec" was whelped in May of 2010. Sire: Miller's Happy Jack. Dam: Phillips Silver Star.

Nathan Phillips was the breeder of the litter, and Spec was Mr. Ferrel Miller's pick from the litter. Gary Lester was his owner and handler for many years and accumulated many placements with him: R-U,2015 Continental Championship; 2014-15 Purina Top All-Age Dog; and, most notably, the 2015 National Championship. Spec has sired many dogs, whether they are someone's best hunting dog, plantation dog, or trial dog. The most well-known being his two sons, who also became National Champions: Miller's Speed Dial and Dunn's Tried'n True.

We acquired Spec in 2018. Sean placed him a few times, and so did Luke Eisenhart. I can't recall when we quit trialing him, but it wasn't because he lacked desire; he still had a strong nose and legs, but his hearing was going. He became our main stud dog and king yard dog.
While we lived in Georgia, he had the run of the place, and he usually stayed around the house or kennel....until he would get a wild hair to run off and find some birds! He gave me many heart attacks cause he was still running all-age and couldn't hear. Thank goodness I would usually find him pointing or chasing!

Spec had the best personality of any pointer we ever had! He loved people and kids and especially biscuits and cheeseburgers.

Spec died in January of 2025.

Please consider Miller's Dialing In for the Hall of Fame.

It's time to put in a legendary scout! Clinton "Joe" Bush has been working bird dogs for over 50 years, since he was a 14-year-old boy living next door to Harold Ray. Joe started out by planting pine trees and doing yard work for Harold, and eventually learned to train dogs on a pigeon line by watching him.

Harold knew Joe wanted to go to Canada, so he called Bill Rayl to see if he needed help. That's how Joe got his start. Strongman was the first champion Joe scouted for Bill. He also scouted Evolution when he won at Hoffman (NC) and Builder's Risk at the Invitational. Most of the championship wins Joe scouted were for dogs that Fred Rayl handled.

Joe scouted Fiddler and Fiddler's Pride for every championship they won. He scouted Evolution, Builder's Addition, Heritage's Premonition, Fiddler's Bo, Fiddler's Pride's Iris, Builder's Free Boy, Ballentine, Spy Hill Bullett, and many more champions. Joe won the International Pheasant Championship with an entry of over 80 dogs. He ran in the first brace and was named champion with no runner-up. The dog's name was Meadowbrook Joe.
Joe is the first black man to train, develop, qualify, and run a dog in the National. He has developed many dogs that became all-age field champions.

Joe Bush has over 50 years of involvement with field trials: scouting, handling, judging, and training. Joe will help, give advice, and encouragement to anyone who asks. Please consider "Joe" Bush for the Hall of Fame!

I first heard the name Cecil Rester from my father, Freddie Epp, who admired a young field trialer from Louisiana with an exceptional eye for breeding outstanding bird dogs. Over the decades, Cecil has continued producing exceptional dogs while earning respect as one of the sport's top competitors.

Cecil's influence extends far beyond his own accomplishments. His breeding program has shaped the field trial community, and many successful trainers, including Robin Gates, have benefited from his dogs and guidance.

When I began competing in amateur stakes, Cecil was one of the toughest competitors to beat, yet he was always willing to offer friendship, encouragement, and help. I'll never forget his words: "I'll give you my best in scouting, but I'll still try to beat you." That perfectly reflects his character as a loyal friend, outstanding sportsman, and fierce competitor.

Although he now handles less, Cecil continues to campaign dogs with young professionals, support clubs and championships, and mentor the next generation. For more than forty years, he has excelled as a handler, owner, breeder, judge, mentor, and supporter of field trials. His accomplishments, breeding expertise, and lasting influence make him richly deserving of induction into the 2026 Field Trial Hall of Fame. I wholeheartedly endorse Cecil Rester and respectfully ask for your vote.

I would like to add to the substantial chorus of individuals who are promoting Cecil Rester for the Field Trial Hall of Fame.

Individuals like Cecil are why Halls of Fame were invented. A perpetual place of honor for significant contributions to a shared endeavor. Some single action can be so significant or overwhelming it earns a spot. Or, as in Cecil's case, a lifetime of dedicated service which enriches the experience for all. Cecil has immersed himself in every aspect of our sport. Cecil knows our sport; he knows dogs; he is an acute judge of a sporting dog's ability; he has educated himself in animal husbandry and has become one of the foremost current English pointer breeders. Many owners of dogs he bred have had their field trial experiences enhanced by owning dogs from Cecil's breeding program. He is excellent at starting and finishing young dogs; he can show a dog with the best. Cecil has formed clubs, managed trials, and worked the administrative side.

I have enjoyed many days with Cecil. We have shared a camp in North Dakota, judged together, and spent many hours together working dogs and attending various trials from Canada to Florida. He is respected everywhere he goes.

Cecil is a born educator; he loves teaching. One of his great contributions is helping anyone improve. He is excited to judge youth trials, to help young handlers. Cecil has given much; his field career looms large, and he would honor the Hall of Fame as it would honor him.

Cecil Rester fulfills the criteria and high bar expected of a Hall of Fame candidate. Others have detailed the many ways Cecil has given back to the sport. I would like to highlight his long and distinguished service as a field trial judge. The AFTCA Standards describe the attributes a judge should possess: strong moral character, integrity, sound judgment, physical stamina, horsemanship, extensive bird dog knowledge, and practical experience training and competing with dogs.

For more than 25 years, judging major shooting dog and all-age championships, classic and other important stakes, Cecil has consistently demonstrated these attributes. He has been a highly sought-after judge across the country (see list here), earning him the respect and confidence of competitors and field trial clubs. His evaluations of bird dog performance are grounded in decades of experience breeding, developing, and successfully competing with his own dogs.

I first met Cecil when he judged the Florida Championship in 2014. I was also present when he judged the Florida again in 2021 and in 2022, the final year the championship was run. On each occasion, the decisions rendered by Cecil and his judging partners were well received and respected. What stood out most to me was Cecil's concentration and his attentiveness to each and every dog.

Judging is one of the most important responsibilities of our sport. It demands experience, fairness, dedication, and the courage to make difficult decisions. Cecil Rester has repeatedly demonstrated these qualities and has made a lasting contribution to field trials through his service as a judge, further supporting his deserving candidacy for the Hall of Fame.

I have the utmost respect for Cecil as a sportsman, patron, breeder, judge, friend, and human being. Our sport of field trials is better because Cecil's personal participation mirrors the accomplishments of the men and women who have preceded him in the Hall of Fame.

He has been a club officer, a patron of numerous professionals, competed from his Louisiana home in trials all over the country and Canada. Cecil has judged most of the prestigious championships more than once, as well as weekend and youth trials. Cecil has developed one of the more successful breeding programs in the country; dogs with the Rester moniker are often called when the winners are announced. I ask all trainers to join me in supporting Cecil, who is well deserving in every aspect.

This is the time of year to celebrate the many individuals who have contributed to field trials in so many ways. Some with exemplary winning records, some with a lifelong dedication to breeding, some with sponsorship to the sport via time, effort, use of grounds, and the campaigning of dogs. Though there are others who enter into the discussion this year and are certainly worthy of Hall of Fame Honors, Joe Bush is worthy of recognition and consideration.

Joe Bush has spent a lifetime committed to field trials and training, and has left his mark on some of today's hallmark competitors and foundation pointer lines. His skill as a scout with Bill and Freddie Rayl span decades and includes a total of 9 Quail Invitational Champion and Runner-up Championship titles with great champions as CH Builder's Risk, HOF CH Builder's Addition, HOF CH Fiddler, and HOF CH Fiddler's Pride, among others. The list of dogs Joe Bush had a part in is impressive and distinguished.

When I first met Cecil Rester, I was already an experienced hunter and outdoorsman, but stepping into the world of training bird dogs to the AF standard was a new challenge. While I had a passion for dogs and the outdoors, I had much to learn about advanced dog training. Cecil never judged my inexperience or my choice of breed. Instead, he welcomed me, encouraged me, and gave me the confidence to pursue this path. Cecil taught me far more than the mechanics of training dogs. He taught me how to think like a trainer and understand the factors that contribute to success in the field. He freely shared knowledge gained through decades of experience and patiently guided me through learning not only how to handle dogs, but how to do so on horseback.

Watching Cecil work with dogs is like watching a master craftsman at work. He has an exceptional ability to make the right decision at the right moment as a breeder, trainer, and handler. His accomplishments are the result of years of dedication, intuition, and a deep understanding of dogs. Beyond his achievements, Cecil has given immeasurably to the sport through his mentorship. He was always willing to answer questions, offer guidance, and help others improve. Much of what I have accomplished as a dog trainer can be traced directly to his generosity and willingness to invest in others. Cecil's impact extends far beyond his wins and his dogs. He has shaped countless people and is truly deserving of Hall of Fame recognition.

Cecil has devoted many years to all phases of field trials. He has spent many hours in the saddle judging field trials throughout the county. Not only is he a fierce competitor, a good friend, and a mentor to many young and old. He is always looking to improve the quality of field trials. I feel his achievements over the last 40-plus years more than qualify him for the Field Trial Hall of Fame.

Please join me in supporting Cecil Rester to be inducted into the 2026 Field Trial Hall of Fame

John Russell served as chairman of the Quail Championship Invitational for over 20 years. With his wife Kayleen as secretary, he organized and administered this important Championship, securing competent, respected judges and marshals, and tracking eligible invitees. He cared for judges' horses. Before becoming chairman, he did the work for aging JD Boss and Arthur Curtis for several years. He has judged most of the leading all-age stakes multiple times and competed as a handler successfully, placing his Hilltopper Tooter runner-up in the National Derby Championship and Hilltopper Hoss, top qualifier in the Florida Championship. He is a true giver to the sport.

I first met Cecil almost 50 years ago with a group of bird dog men from LA and MS, working dogs and going to the prairie, and I have followed his endeavors and successes ever since. He meets and surpasses every qualification. Always with a smile and friendly manner, always first class.

Clinton "Joe" Bush for the Hall of Fame

The phone call made over 50 years ago between Harold Ray and Bill Rayl set the wheels in motion for 14-year-old Joe Bush's dream of becoming one of the best Dog Trainers/Scouts in the birddog profession to become a reality. Together with Bill Rayl and Fred Rayl, they developed four Hall of Fame dogs: Evolution, Builder's Addition, Fiddler's Pride, and Fiddler.

Joe Bush was an integral part of Bill Rayl and Fred Rayl's success for 30 years. The bond between the Rayls and Joe Bush was strong; together, they developed and produced 31 champions and 16 runner-up champions, amassing over 60 championships and close to 100 runner-up championship placements in about every major field trial venue from Canada to Florida.

Chris Catanzarite became a friend a couple of years ago when I ran my first field trial dog. He offered me handling techniques as well as training tips. I have since then run 4 dogs, 2 pointers, and 2 setters in planted bird trials and cover dog trials. He kept me motivated and helped me tremendously. He is always helpful to newcomers. He is a positive support to the trial community.

I would like to nominate Chris Catazarite for the Hall of Fame. I am still relatively new to the sport of horseback field trialing, and I owe a lot of the success I have had to Chris. He has been a wealth of knowledge and a true friend. Chris has provided handling advice, horse & dog training advice, as well as successfully scouting one of my dogs to 2 Futurity placements. I know I am just one of the many people that Chris has inspired along the way.

I have had the privilege for 38 years to watch my husband, Cecil Rester, pursue his never-ending love of field trialing. For the past 50 years, Cecil has been passionately involved in the sport. Over his career, he has achieved uncommon success in the sport on every level, as a breeder of Champions, a handler, a judge, a club official, a friend, and a mentor to newcomers to the sport.

Cecil's passion for the sport and the dogs has never wavered. He still enjoys breeding and developing young dogs, and working them as much as he ever has. Over the years, Cecil has given much of his time to judging trials from major Championships to youth field trials. He always says he never gets tired of watching a good dog work.
I believe over the years in the sport, he has exceeded all expectations of a worthy and deserving candidate for the Field Trial Hall of Fame.

I proudly nominate and ask for your support in electing Cecil Rester to the Field Trial Hall of Fame.

I would like to endorse Cecil Rester for the 2026 Field Trial Hall of Fame. I have known Cecil for many years, and he has been actively involved in all aspects of field trial bird dogs. From being a fierce competitor, judge, club official, breeder, trainer, owner, and patron to many handlers, Cecil has served many roles. Cecil has shared his knowledge and talents with many people and has always been willing to help anyone find a good dog or a new puppy. He has bred, raised, and developed many champions, and the Rester prefix is still prevalent and has improved the pointer breed. Cecil has always been willing to travel and has spent many a mile just to come judge or run his dogs in support of many clubs. For nearly fifty years, Cecil has devoted his time and service to the field trial sport. He and his wife, Holly, are friends to all, and I would encourage everyone to join me in support of Cecil Rester to be elected to the Field Trial Hall of Fame.

I'm writing to endorse Cecil Rester for this year's Hall of Fame. Cecil has dedicated most of his life to field trials. He's an exceptional breeder of high-class bird dogs. Cecil has bred, raised, and developed champion dogs for himself and many prominent pros for many years. The "Rester's" prefix is well-known and highly respected throughout the sport. His dogs have won in all-age, shooting dog, walking, and youth trials, winning multiple Purina and other yearly awards. Not only has Cecil bred, raised, competed, and won with his dogs, but he also finds other ways to give to the sport. He has judged most of the premier championships and Invitationals. Also, he gives to our youth by judging their youth trials several times. Cecil has given his life to field trials, and it's time we celebrate what he's accomplished and given. Please elect Cecil Rester to the field trial hall of fame. Cast your vote for a most deserving man. Cast your vote for my friend Cecil Rester. The Hall of Fame was made for men like Cecil.
