National Walking Shooting Dog Futurity (l-r): Krysta Munden, Eric Munden with Wildland Hide The Wine, Norm Meeder, Aaron McAfee with Crow Creek Redbud, Tony Bingham (judge), Joe Cammisa with Saddled Up Sadie, Mark Hughes, Cliff Monroe (judge), Chris Catanzarite with Backcountry Pure Gold, and Dave Hughes.
The 33rd National Walking Shooting Dog Futurity was met with very difficult weather conditions. Strong wind and driving rain were constant for much of the weekend. The 33rd edition also saw a new venue in Warrior's Mark Shooting Preserve, located outside of Houtzdale, Pa., in the central part of the state. The staff at Warrior's Mark were very accommodating and gracious hosts. The grounds proved to be a suitable test and measure of a quality shooting dog. We welcomed two first-time National Walking Shooting Dog Futurity judges--Tony Bingham and Cliff Monroe--both of Shelby, N. C. I cannot thank Tony and Cliff enough for enduring the arduous task of judging for the entirety of the field trial, including both companion stakes in far-from-ideal conditions. Thank you to Purina and Lion Country Supply for their continued support of our sport, and finally, thank you to all the competitors, owners, and breeders who continue to make this a quality event. Finally, a big thank you to my fellow officers Norm Meeder and Joe Cammisa, who are selfless in their support of our sport and, due to their efforts, made this field trial, among others, very successful.
The Winners of the 33rd National Walking Shooting Dog Futurity
First place Wildland Hide The Wine came from the third brace and set the bar quite high for all those following with six well-mannered finds with lofty style and a strong, consistent ground performance, which was easily directed by owner and handler Eric Munden.
Second place belonged to Crow Creek Redbud, setting the early standard in the first brace with a very solid and mature performance, including four well-mannered finds and a back for breeder and handler Aaron McAfee.
Third place went to Saddled Up Sadie under the whistle of pro trainer Mark Hughes. In the second brace, Sadie had three quality finds with a strong forward and well-applied ground race. Sadie is owned and bred by Joe Cammisa of Butler, Pa., and is a littermate to first-place winner Wildland Hide The Wine.
Fourth place was taken by the successful Backcountry Pure Gold. Dee is no stranger to the winners' circle as she was skillfully directed by owner/breeder/handler Chris Catanzarite. Dee ran in the final brace and possibly the worst conditions of the day, tallying four finds with a big, far-reaching forward race.
Once again, Joe, Norm, and I cannot thank everyone who supports this futurity, and we are continually grateful for the support of everyone involved.
