The Midwest Open Shooting Dog Championship and accompanying derby stake were concluded on March 17. The trial was contested over three one hour courses on the Bill Westfall ranch near Elk City, Kansas. Thirty nine shooting dogs and 16 derbies ran in their respective stakes. Dr. Stan Wint from Gardner, Kansas and Dr. Robert Rankin from Edmund, Oklahoma judged the trial.
After the running trial chairman Garvin Collins announced the winners. Upfront's Southern Star was named champion. Star ran an exciting race hunting each objective with speed and an attractive way of going. She pointed game three times during the hour with style and perfect manners. Star is owned by Lance Schultz and was handled by Shawn Kinkelaar.
Game Sport was named runner up. Sport is owned by Bart Hicklin and was handled by Harold Gearhart. Sport ran a strong forward race and pointed game twice with style and perfect manners. No birds were pointed in the derby stake and placements were based on race. Hale's Country Buzz handled by Eddy Taylor for owner Dr. Jeff Hale won the stake. Creative Lady placed second handled by Chuck Stretz for owner Robert Reynolds. Third place was won by L P handled by Shawn Kinkelaar. L P is owned by Nicole Lombardi and Doug Swingley.
