The South Carolina Amateur Shooting Dog Classic held the 59th renewal January 5-7 over the fabled H. Cooper Black which is located between Cheraw and Patrick, South Carolina, just off highway 1. The Association was blessed to receive thirty-five of the best amateur shooting dogs in the south and northeast for this year's event.
Birds and quality judges are the two main ingredients that make any field trial successful. We were very fortunate to obtain Mark Hughes of Grampian, Pennsylvania, and Scott Miller of Beaufort, South Carolina. These two-gentleman worked extremely well together. Mark and Scott, road a perfect pace and gave each entry their undivided attention.
The Winners
Claiming first place in this highly competitive stake was the handsome-made orange and white pointer male, Hirollins B K Bulletproof. Warren Parrott of Pamlico, South Carolina, is the proud owner and handler. "Boogie" drew the third brace Friday morning and rendered an intelligent display of forward hunting and was mindful of his handler. Boogie's efforts were rewarded at 4, 10, 35, and pick up time.
Boogie's picturesque pointing style and manners to the gun were extraordinary on each find. All riding in the gallery knew the Parrott contender would be tuff to beat.
Second place was awarded to the dynamic pointer male Calico's Over The Top. Overthetop is co-owned by Alex and Tiffany Smith and Calico Kennels. Long time field trainer Mr. Frank Henderson made the trip down south with his son in law Alex to scout the Calico string.
Calico's Over The Top made his gusty bid in the first brace Saturday morning. Over The Top was found pointing at 4. Alex confidently dismounted and flushed quail for his stylish animal. Once again at 25 Alex called point in the "mind field" with everything in order for flush and shot. The rain had become harder with gusty winds blowing. Over The Top continued to hunt at great distances for the remainder of his hour.
A trial is never over until Back Country Bruiser has made his run. Pennsylvanian Chris Catanzarite is the proud owner and handler of the strapping 6-year-old pointer male. Bruiser ran an ideal shooting dog race, complimented with a textbook field trial find at 7. Bruiser and Chris were in perfect Sync during the entire hour.
The shorthair, Snow River presented birds to the gun on 5 occasions for his owner-handler Mr. Miller. In the first brace Calico's Country Strong had two great pieces of bird work and a natural back. Bracemate B K Blinder with 4 pieces of bird work. Sugarknoll White Lightning was rewarded for his efforts on 5 different occasions.
The South Carolina Association greatly appreciates Greg Blair of Nestle Purina for helping support our classic this year. We are planning next year's event and are looking forward to seeing all in January 2025.
