This year's NVA Midwest Shooting Dog Championship and Gary Jagoda Derby were held at The Bird Dog Ranch in Thayer, Iowa. Due to weather and timing, the Championship was postponed until the spring. The Thayer grounds were in excellent shape thanks to continual improvements by owner Linda Thomas. The volunteer crew at the grounds put in hundreds, if not thousands, of hours to keep the place a National-caliber site. These efforts are led by Ken Windom with help from the local Brittany clubs and Justin Hess of the National Vizsla Association.

The Shooting Dog Championship started on Friday, April 19. Moving forward, this weekend will be the new official date. The champion and runner-up both came from the sixth brace. Pyro (Justin Hess, O/H) and Flame (Cody Engebretson, O; Mike Northwood, H) broke away with a vengeance. Pyro carded four stylish and staunch finds over the hour. Flame was rewarded with three finds and slowed at the end, separating the two, with Pyro coming out on top.
Lisa Pollock and Dr. Brent Hoehns stepped up to judge this year's event; both were pleased with the quality of dog the NVA put forth. Other dogs the judges commented on were Jasper (Mike Northwood, O/H) and Louie (Billy Elliot, O; Todd Meyer, H).

The Gary Jagoda Derby was represented with four quality derbies. Winner Cinnamon is owned by Kim Kitchens and handled by Rob Tomczak. Cinnamon ran a huge race with two broke finds. In second place was Wiley, owned by Dave Wanserski and handled by Rob Tomczak. Wiley had a nice race and was rewarded with two finds. In third place was Jasper, owned and handled by Mike Northwood. Jasper had a big race and was out of touch for a while, leaving him birdless. Wiley and Jasper placed in the NVA National Derby a month prior.
The NVA would like to thank Purina, Garmin, and Haggis Saddlery for their continued support. Without great sponsors these events are not possible.
