Open Shooting Dog (l-r). 1st: Mark Johnson with Erin's Tin Lizzie, Sean Patrick Derrig (Judge) 2nd Danny Draffen with Double D's Red Lancelot, Terry Trzcinki (Purina) 3rd Adam Delude with Alliwood's Never Say Never.

The Field Trial Club of Illinois Winner's Classic was held March 16-17, 2024, at Jim Edgar Panther Creek State Park near Chandlerville, Illinois. The grounds combine cropland and rolling grasslands with native quail and pheasant. This year's renewal saw great weather compared to last year's frigid temperatures, with 40-60 degrees and sunny skies enjoyed by all. We got competitors from three different states and multiple breeds to come and compete for this year's winner's classic. We want to thank Nestle Purina, Greg Blair and Terry Trzcinski, for their continued support and bird planter Pat Sheehan for making sure everyone had an opportunity to point the game. While a detailed report of the entire trial is not available, we were able to record the open stakes:

The Open shooting dog was a competitive stake, with several dogs having multiple finds.
Brace 1: Tex (ESM/Nierman) and Luke (PM/Johnson). Tex has two well-spaced finds and applied himself well through the brace. Luke has his running shoes on to make large forward casts but could not find any game in the half hour.
Brace 2: Charlie (PM/Duvall) and Bull (PM/Sheehan). Charlie and Bull made great opening casts and were found pointed at 5 with Charlie backing. This find required relocation, which Bull handled well. The two went on and were again found pointing and backing at 15. Birds ran out as handlers approached, and Bull moved and was picked up. Charlie waited staunchly and finished the brace with large forward casts.
Brace 3 Bess (PF/Hott) and Kate (PF/Wagoner). Bess had her running shoes on and checked out at 15. Kate applied herself well through the brace but was unable to locate game.
Brace 4: Ty (PM/Wagoner) and Lizzie (PF/Johnson). Ty and Lizzie started strong, hitting the right objectives. Lizzie was found pointing with Ty backing. Ty moved up and was collared as we approached. Lizzie waited staunchly through flush and went on to have a strong race, being found pointed again at 15 before dropping down into the bottoms. She then continued to power to the front until pick-up time but responded well to the handler throughout to garner first place.
Brace 5: Bill (PM/Hott) and Red (PM/Draffen). Bill started strong but failed to back and was picked up. Red applied himself well, having two finds and a UP in his half hour. His race was consistently to the front, not requiring excessive handling, and a pleasure to watch to garner 2nd place.
Brace 6: Trace (PM/Sheehan) and Rylee (PF/Duvall). This brace tested the boundaries of the course, with both dogs reaching for further objectives. They were unable to find game in the half hour but showed well at times.
Brace 7: Ellie (PF/Delude) and Maddie (GSPF/Vicari). Ellie and Maddie both started strong and pushed each other each step of the way. Ellie had one find and had to be ridden for hard at pick up. Maddie also had an intense find along the wood line and had to be ridden to pick up. It was a very close brace, with Ellie getting the nod for 3rd place.
Brace 8: Dani (PF/Duvall) and June (PF/Delude). The brace of the cheeseheads was underway, and both of these females put down strong races. Dani was unable to locate game in her hour with June having a rabbit in the first 5 minutes.

Open Derby
Brace 1: Kate (PF/Hott) and Junior (GSPM/Vicari). Kate ran a well-applied derby race, clearly hunting every step of the way. Junior was a bit more unpredictable and wider but found game twice, waiting for Mike Vicari to flush both times before breaking to flush to garner third.
Brace 2: Mike (PM/Wagoner) and Rip (PM/Sneed). Mike started well but started to hunt closer as the brace progressed. He handled it well for Wagoner, hitting the right objectives. Rip started slow but got wider and wider as the brace progressed while still being in tune with the handler. Rip was awarded 1st and Mike 2nd in the stake:
Brace 3: Kate (PF/Johnson) and Max (PM/Wagoner). Max was not suited to Wagoner and was picked up early. Kate improved as the brace progressed but, without a bracemate, did not have the range the judges were looking for.

The Amateur Shooting dog placements were all awarded based on bird work and ground application while the amateur derby placements were placed on ground race. Apologies, as the notes for the amateur were destroyed.

We look forward to seeing everyone at the 2025 renewal.
