Powhatan Field Trial Club held its annual trial at Kat Shannon's beautiful Slate River farm in Buckingham County, Virginia, on January 6, 2025.
The participants toughed out a cold but beautiful day for a field trial. The help was plentiful as all pitched in where needed, and hopefully, I don't leave anyone out. The judges had drivers on the two side-by-sides provided by the farm and by Steve and Julie Moore. Jenna Johnson, Donna Kivikko, Kristin Murray, and Steve Graham helped with chauffeur duties.
The bird planting was expertly handled by Tyler Wolf, and Kirk Regensburg provided the 4-wheeler for those duties. Darek Kivikko drove the tractor, keeping the gallery wagon in position for spectators. Pat Brooks provided the gallery wagon, and the farm provided the tractor.
Julie Moore made sure nobody went hungry. She served a southern-style pulled pork BBQ with all the sides, fixings, and desserts. It was incredible. Her husband Steve was a last-minute scratch with pneumonia, and they generously donated lunch donations back to the club.
Judges Steve Graham and Ken Delong put up Bobby Phillips' front running puppy, Bob's Elhew Pat. Pat showed tremendous potential for all to see.
Bobby Phillips again found the winners' circle with his derby, Bob's Elhew June. Judges Ken Delong and Trey Rector liked her front-running objective-seeking style to slightly edge out the other strong prospect, Lee Flanders' Kate. Both youngsters showed they have what it takes to move forward in their careers.
Dennis Kivikko and Trey Rector judged the Shooting Dog. Lee Flanders' fine Setter, Jack, put on a show. Jack's flowing, stylish ground application produced three well-spaced and stylish finds and was credited with one well-mannered and stylish back. Ashby Morgan handled Mohawk Mill Charmer to a close second. Charmer ran a hard-charging forward race with three nice finds. Kirk Regensburg's "Bess" rounded out the three with four finds and withstood pressure from her bracemate early on. She hunted well and stayed to the front.
