The 109th running of the Pinehurst Field Trial was held on the Hoffman grounds in NC. The weather was pleasant for the Amateur Derby and Amateur All-Age over the six one-hour courses--competitive performance from each stake with ample birds throughout the running.
We are most appreciative of the support of Purina for their sponsorship. The judging assignment was Larry Cox of North Carolina and Gene Hogge of Virginia. They set a good pace and were attentive to each brace.
It takes support and help to put on a field trial. Thanks are given to all in this endeavor. Randy Bradshaw drove the dog wagon and was always there when called for. Randy and his wife Marsha also provided soup for Friday's lunch. Mack Hilliard also was most supportive and helpful in providing lunches throughout the trial. John and Gretchen Adsit are to be recognized for help in serving meals, cleaning, and preparing from the kitchen as needed. They have always been helpful and supportive for this trial and most trials held throughout the season. All of these supporters made for an enjoyable trial. A Saturday night social hour and meal were provided for all participants, guests, and local residents.
The Derby stake was highly contested, with all placements being on birds. First place went to Bonner's Lynn Grove, handled by Derek Bonner. Derek and Scott Griffin are the co-owners. Grove ran to the front, hunted with quickness, style, and hunt. She was credited with an up-front find. Second place was garnered by Armed for Jim Pendergest. Armed had a lot of drive and show credited with one find. Both the first and second place were in the same brace and put on a show for their time down. This was an exciting brace and most enjoyable from the gallery observance. Rocky River Reloaded took third place for Grayson Francis. "Hank" also had a good showing and was pleasant throughout his brace. He was not as strong nor as consistent as those placed, but it had a good, strong run, credited with one find--a good brace, a very good Derby stake.
In the hour-long all-age stake, both first and second place were rewarded to Rodney Postin. His dogs went through the country, hunting to the front. Very little scouting, not taking any easy footing, a good hour with each of his charges having excellent birdwork.
Excalibur River Queen took first place with the two finds, and second place went to Palmetto's Knight Light with one find. Chimney Creek Bud took third place for owner Will Herring. Bud was credited with one fine, all being in order, and ran a very good race to the front and showed well for the hour.
