The Cockade Bird Dog Club finally got to run their trial after being rained out and then snowed out. The weather was finally dry and pretty warm. The grounds were in great shape to see a dog.
The trial was held March 28-29, 2025, at Cutawhiskie Farm in Ahoskie, North Carolina. Friday began with the one-hour All-Age. Third place was awarded to Mohawk Mill Hawkeye, with two good finds and a nice race. Second was awarded to Dry Creek Ares, who also had two good finds and a nice race. First was awarded to Mohawk Mill Dolly's Girl, a derby with one really nice find where her bracemate went by her on point and she remained steady with an extreme all-age race and a big finish, extremely classy on the ground and did not let the heat bother her, an exciting hour.
Saturday morning, we moved to the Shooting Dog stake. We changed up the course for the shooting dogs, which flowed very well and allowed the shooting dogs to show well. Mohawk Mill Big Stuff was the hard-luck dog of the stake. After several nice finds, he was lost in the warm-season grasses at the end of the course, on point. Third place was awarded to Beechwoods Cowboy Up for Sharon Townley with nice birdwork and a nice shooting dog performance. Second was awarded to Bad News Bob for Bruce Conover, with nice birdwork and handling the course well. First went to Greypointe Nubarron for Worth Lewis, who had very nice birdwork and a very nice shooting dog race.
The afternoon was very warm on the derbies. The Mohawk Mill derbies showed out with a clean sweep of all three placements. Mohawk Mill Cliffhanger was awarded third with one good find and a good derby race, and second was awarded to Mohawk Mill Jet Stream with three nice finds, a classy, nice race, but showed some immaturity at times, got pressure from his bracemate until finally picked up. He showed great potential as a derby for next year. Mohawk Mill Dolly's Girl came back from winning the All-Age to have a big edge running race and a broke find at time.
A great big thank you goes out to Purina and Greg Blair for their continued support of the trial with dog food for all placements.
We were fortunate to have judges who have all bred dogs, raised dogs, trained their own dogs, and competed in field trials. A great big thank you to each one--Ashby Morgan, Sharon Townley, Jeff Smith, Terry McCormick, and Jameson Crandell, who stepped in at the last minute. The judges rode at a good, steady pace for each brace and were very attentive.
Thank you to Barbel Fetkoter for her preparation of great lunches, breakfasts, and all the additives to the meals. Thank you to Sharon Townley for the quail appetizers and roll-ups, Carolyn McCormick for the peach cobbler, Stevie Graham's wife for the brownies and pound cake, and Jim Jones for the meatballs.
Thank you to Steve Graham for being the official bird planter throughout the entire trial. Birds were plentiful and available to the dogs. To Phil Townley and Jim Jones for running the dog wagon, getting the dogs on the line, and getting them picked up after the braces.
Thank you to the Virginia Amateur Field Trial Association for the use of the grounds. Everyone pitched in in so many ways, and I could not have done it without each one of you. Thank you to all who entered dogs. Finally, to Gary Winall for his support before, during, and after the trial.
