The Region 3 Amateur Shooting Dog Championship ran on April 6 and 7 using the spectacular grounds of John and Vivian Milton in Scottsville, Virginia. Their Greenfields Farm is loaded with edges for a good dog to utilize and look good doing it. A dog can be seen as an advantage and also as a disadvantage. The winners in this Championship were always far to the front in those beautiful field edges. The Greenfields venue was a wedding gift from the father of Virginia Delegate Buck Langhorne to his son and was held in that famous Virginia for many years. The family was also famous for Buck's sisters, who were world-renowned beauties and patterns for The Gilmore Girls. The most famous was Lady Nancy Astor, the first woman to be seated in Parliament. The sisters were indeed beautiful, just as Greenfields is a place of outstanding beauty. Thank you to John and Vivian for sharing with us for a while.

Purina and Greg Blair sponsored the Championship, and we are endeared to them for their products and generosity.

Grayson Francis chaired the event.

Julie Richards fed us terrific meals. Darryl Miller was in charge of the birds, and Mike Winchester ran the dog wagon. Both know and perform their jobs flawlessly.
The judges were both seasoned veterans. Steve Mills and Tommy Stargell have judged championship stakes in both Shooting Dog and All-Age events all over this country. They enjoy each other's company and see dogs the same way. They share a knowledge of what they are looking for.

The runner-up champion was Calico's Country Strong, running in the first brace. Everyone who saw the performance knew something special had just gone forth. His ground race was beautiful for the entire hour. He pointed the planted birds out on the course, looking like he had a checklist. He was stacked up at 5, 16, 24, 29, 35, 48, and 50. His bracemate was up after 35, so he ran a great deal without company.
It was a performance that couldn't be topped - ALMOST.

Erin's Young Offender ran immediately following the Calico dog and beat the pressure put on him, not by a lot, but enough. The bird count was equal plus one. There was a divided find at 3, then finds at 5, 11, 16, 30, 38, 42, and 49. All these garnered by his super nose as he several times winded birds, not putting off much scent. What won it, though, was his finish in the airport field. We watched him go as far as you can see, which is a very long way. The bar for victory was set high by both dogs, one just a little higher.

Lastly, we had a wonderful group of congenital participants. It was fun to be around all who came, and the Greenfields Club enjoyed helping Region 3 by putting on the Championship. Come back to see us!
