HOFFMAN, N. C. -- The Pinehurst Amateur trial was run on the Hoffman, N. C., grounds January 8-10. This was the 105th running of this prestigious trial.
Bitter cold and rain was endured the day on Friday, then cold, bone-biting temperature for Saturday and Sunday's running.
The ground cover is good, birds in sufficient covey count, extremely wild and skittish and observed on all six courses. It might be worthwhile in stating that at this time all courses have placed a winner.
The bird program for the year has been most successful having benefitted trial entries. Thanks are expressed to John Ivester and all who participated and continue to participate in the bird program. Observation of birds this weekend along with prior observation and comments it is felt the trial season will continue with favorable outlook even with the pressure we have put on the birds as these grounds have been pounded.
I would like to thank Purina for rendering their support for this trial. Their participation greatly helped and appreciation was further expressed by participants and winners.
Other support was the dog wagon driver Alford Wood who was always available with the brace to be on hand.
Judges for this renewal were Phil Moser and Zack Bradshaw, both North Carolina residents. They set a fair pace and were equally attentive to each brace. All placements were well received in their decision of placement.
THE WINNERS
In the Amateur Derby, birds were observed, with placements based on race, hunt and foremost all age potential.
First place was Mohawk Mill Bad Boy for owner-handler Gary Winall. Second went to Mohawk Mill Rambling Man, also for Gary Winall. New Salem Sunny took the third for Larry Cox.
The Amateur All-Stake winner was Bonafide Bocephus, setter male for owner Darrell Miller, our Virginia sportsman and Hoffman supporter. This strong running setter had a big front-running race. Miller's charge was credited with three up-front finds!
Second was Mohawk Mill Trail Warrior for Gary Winall. Warrior had a good front running race showing desire and carded with a find at 21 and a back as his hour ran out. Mohawk Mill Gangster took third for owner Gary Winall. This young pointer had a good hour of running showing with hunt and range as the course presented itself to do so. Warrior was rewarded a find at 16.
