Southern New England Woodcock Championship: John Olfson (judge), Trey Rector with One Acre Wood Bandit, John Stolgitis with Mohawk Mill Miss You, and Brian Dix (judge).
After a long, cold, and snowy winter, March 15, the Ides of March, started the spring wild bird season. As always, we are dependent on the weather and the migration of the woodcock. Snow left the grounds the previous week, and all were apprehensive as to whether the birds had arrived yet. By the end of the first brace, there was no doubt our timing was on spot. The New England Amateur Woodcock Classic was first up on the docket. Judges for this year's Classic were Tim Cavanaugh and Russell Ogilvie. Both men are highly respected and accomplished field trialers. Day one featured big galleries and nice weather. Multiple birds were moved on every brace and every course, once again showcasing Arcadia as the premier Spring wild bird grounds. Trey Rector's One Acre Wood Lucky, last year's winner, sponsored this year's Saturday evening dinner. It was extremely well attended, with many saying it was the best meal they had ever had at a trial. Smoked meats and fish, cheeses, several hot dips, oysters on the half shell, scallops wrapped in bacon, mussels steamed in garlic and wine, steamer clams, Caesar salad, Lighthouse potatoes, and prime rib with red wine portobello gravy and apple pie for dessert. No one left hungry.
Day two once again featured large galleries and once again moved birds on every brace. The judges gave their undivided, helpful attention to every amateur entered. Kudos to both. Third place went to Sunkhaze Vera Masardis, owned and handled by Mike Flewelling, with a strong race and one find. Second place went to Chasehill Snoop Dog, owned and handled by Bill McFadden. Snoop had three finds and a stop to flush for Bill's return to handling a dog in a trial after a 20+ year hiatus. Dave Theroux's Henry's Suzieq Dot bested the field with a strong ground performance and three exceptional finds. Congratulations to all and thanks to our sponsor, Purina and Greg Blair, and to all who make this a great weekend for New England Amateurs.
Championship
The Southern New England Woodcock Championship began on St. Patrick's Day. Monday morning, we were met with heavy rains. Judges John Olfson and Brian Dix took advantage of modern technology and watched the weather radar closely, dodging the downpours to give every dog a fair opportunity to perform. Despite the weather, birds were once again moved on every brace. Monday night's St. Patrick's Day corned beef and cabbage dinner, sponsored by Bob Little and last year's winner, Cairds Cracklin Rosie, was also extremely well attended. Thanks to Jill Stolgitis for opening her home and hosting dinners SIX nights in a row.
On day two, the weather was much improved, and a new batch of birds moved in on the weather. The judges named Trey Rector's One Acre Wood Bandit champion. Bandit had a powerful race with two finds. Bill and Karen McFadden's Mohawk Mill Miss You was named runner-up with three finds for handler John Stolgitis. Thanks again to Greg Blair and Purina for their continued support.
