The South Dakota Classic, formerly the Shadow Oak Field Trial, commenced September 7 near McLaughlin, South Dakota. The Shadow Oak Field Trial Club was founded by the late Butch Houston of Nashville, Georgia, with assistance from John Neely and Caleb Hardeman. The Shadow Oak ran for several years on Butch's Shadow Oak Plantation until his passing in 2022.
With help from Butch's son, Adam Houston, the decision was made to move the trial to the prairies. Wild bird trials and training are an important part of the development of all pointing breeds. For the continued betterment of the breed and sport, all bird dog enthusiasts must work together to ensure this continues.

It would not be possible to have a quality trial without good judges and sponsors. We were fortunate to have both! The judges for the Open Derby were L. J. Lundstrom of Peever, South Dakota, and Lance Schultz of Bismarck, North Dakota. Occupying the judicial seats for the Open Shooting Dog were Tommy Rice III of Pavo, Georgia, and L. J. Lundstrom.

Many thanks to our sponsors: Mick Merrietta/World Class Kennels, The Western Rancher of Mobridge, Runnings of Mobridge, Bingers Restaurant of Mobridge, Whoa Buck Enterprises (Don Marsh), and Purina.

The Open Derby stake started Sunday, September 7. Eleven derbies came to the line with cool temps and partly cloudy skies. Winning the Derby stake was pointer male Mayhaw's New Money, handled by Trey Mills. "Russ" ran a powerful forward race for the length of the brace and had to be ridden for at time. HH Smokeshow ("Babe"), handled by Jessie Graffam, had a strong forward race to place second. Placing third was pointer male, Osceolas Silver Colt, handled by Jason Loper. Colt had a good forward race with a find on a single sharptail and a strong finish.

The Open Shooting Dog stake, with 35 contenders entered, started after a short lunch on Sunday and ended on Wednesday, September 10. Conditions for the stake were warm and dry. Winning the Open Shooting Dog was pointer male Southern Shadow's T-Bone, handled by Brian Peterson and owned by Brian along with Lance Servais. Bone ran the second brace after lunch on Monday. He was forward and strong on the ground and had the find of the stake on a huge covey of sharptails with a great finish going away. Placing second was pointer male Just Sayin, owned by Mike Moses and handled by Judd Carlton. Sayin had a find on a single sharptail along with a strong forward race and finish in the heat of the day. The third-place dog came in the next-to-last brace of the trial. Pointer female Laura Pergolizzi, owned by Doug Swingley and handled by Shawn Kinkelaar, had a good forward race and a find on a covey of sharptails.
