The Tallapoosa Field Trial Club held its 66th annual fall field trial on October 17-19 at the JL Lester WMA in Cedartown, Georgia. This trial was a "weekend" trial consisting of 30-minute braces in Amateur and Open Derby and Amateur and Open Shooting Dog stakes. It was truly October in Georgia with above-normal temperatures and very dry conditions. Although it was hot and dry with heavy green cover, the performances were commendable. We were blessed with a good entry with dogs representing the states of Georgia, Tennessee, Alabama, and Florida. The club would like to extend its deepest gratitude to everyone who came in support of the trial.
We are very proud to be running our trial under the banner of the Southern Bird Hunters Association, which is a forward-thinking organization working very hard to continue making field trials great and carrying on the time-honored traditions of fairness and fun in competition. We are also thankful for the SBHA sponsors who not only show up but also show out in regard to active participation and dedication to our sport. Lynn Carradine with Eukanuba was present for the entirety of the trial and always brings a wealth of knowledge regarding pet nutrition and well-being. Coupled with her authentic and unassuming personality, it is always such a joy to spend time with her. We would also like to extend special thanks to our other sponsors, James O'Neal Dodge, SportDOG, and Gundog Central. I ask everyone to support these sponsors whenever possible, as they provide much support to keep the field trial sport vibrant.
We utilized a rotating panel of judges, but not as rotating as originally planned, due to a couple having to withdraw for differing reasons. Jeff Gibbons was a lifesaver as Jeff is so supportive and stepped in to judge each stake except the Open Derby. The Open Derby was judged by Bill Goodwin and Ben Stringer, the Open Shooting Dog by John Neely and Jeff Gibbons, the Amateur Derby by Jeff Gibbons and Jim Crayne, and the Amateur Shooting Dog by Jeff Gibbons and Brad Macke. Thank you to each person who gave of their time to judge. Your support is appreciated more than you know.
Recognition must also be extended to Danny Robinson, our infamous bird planter, and Lavon King for his work preparing the grounds, along with those responsible for preparing our meals and assisting with the clean-up of the clubhouse each day. As anyone who puts on trials knows, there is plenty of work and details to attend to. We have such a great group who unselfishly give of themselves and time to make our trial a huge success year after year. Thank you! We look forward to hosting this event again next fall, and we invite you to join us for a fun-filled weekend of competition and fellowship.
