Region 19 Amateur All Age Championship

Championship Winners. From left to right: Don Dack, Rich Boumeester with Boumeester's Evangelist, Judges Jim Tande and Bob Saari; Austin Turley with Cold Creek Uncle Sam, and Ian MacTavish.

The Region 19 Derby and Amateur All-Age Championship were held in a spectacular fall setting on the Namekagon Barrens near Danbury, Wis. The venue offers three one-hour courses, all affording outstanding opportunity to find sharptail grouse.

Through the years the Barrens have seen an incredibly stable population of grouse. Much credit can be given to the aggressive cover management of the barrens using primarily fire. The payoff is readily visible.

Rich Boumeester, president of the Northwest Field Association oversaw the club's hosting responsibilities along with our Club Secretary-Treasurer Katherine Gove.

Don Dack was here to help run the dog wagon which is no small effort on these grounds. Club members all pitched in whenever needed to make sure things were done in a timely manner. Both stakes ran without delay throughout their entirety.

This year's program started with the Open Derby. Judging the Derby wereDave Moore of Big Lake Minn., and myself.

THE WINNERS

Austin Turley's young pointer female Carbonado's Silver Sage impressed with her focus to find game and her success in doing so. On three occasions she connected with game. Her combination of groundwork and success in finding game was the most complete performance we had, earning her first place.

Second and third place were selected solely on their efforts searching for birds. They were not successful in finding game but showed a lot of focus, natural physical and mental ability and early training to rise above the other performances. John Matthys' big handsome male pointer Notorious Front Range earned second, while Rich Boumeester handled Scott Jordan's pointer male Navajo Nation to third.

Region 19 Amateur All-Age Championship saw an entry of 22 contenders, nineteen pointers, two setters and a Vizsla. When the contest ended Judges Tim Tande of Park Rapids, Minn., and Bob Saari of Crystal, Minn., named Rich Boumeester's three-year- old male pointer Boumeester's Evangelist champion. Evangelist is an offspring of the Dominator's Rebel Heir ex Bar P Fizz mating. Evangelist's litter brother Notorious Dominators Heir captured the Region 19 Amateur Shooting Dog Championship on these grounds just days earlier.

Evangelist pointed game on two occasions and provided a smooth strong and consistent hour of hunting.

Runner-up champion honors went to Ian MacTavish's Derby-age pointer male Cold Creek Uncle Sam. Running in the last brace of the stake, Sam also scored twice on game. Similar to the champion's performance Ian MacTavish's youngster put forth a strong consistent forward hour on a really challenging venue.
