The Winners. From left to right: Bill Brown (judge), Ken Delong with Champion Faith's Maximum Justice, Mike Branscum, David Emert with Runner-Up Emert's Show Me Motu, Ronnie Roger (judge), and Scott Luther.
The ABHA Western Regional Championship took place at Central Kentucky WMA near Berea, Ky., on November 19. A heavy blanket of frost lingered for the first three braces combined with little air movement made scenting conditions tough for the participants.
Taking the saddle to judge this event was longtime field trialer Bill Brown of Waco, Ky., and Ronnie Rogers of New Market, Tenn.
Emerging to the top of the pack was a white and liver pointer male Faith's Maximum Justice, owned and handled by Ken Delong of Greenville, Mich. Justice scored three finds during his bid handling kindly for Ken.
Justice is no stranger to the winners' circle, hot off an earlier championship title the week before in Indiana at the National Amateur Walking Shooting Dog Championship. Justice is also the reigning ABHA Free-for-All Champion.
Earning runner-up honors was a white and orange setter male, Emert's Show Me Motu, owned and handled by Dave Emert of Greer, S. C. Tu ran a classy race coupled with a couple of well-earned finds. Tu is a product of Dave's kennel, his sire also competing in this event. A bright future lies ahead of this first year shooting dog.
Besting the field of walking Derbies was Bang Bang's Long Shot, a male setter owned and handled by Scott Luther. Max ran a strong forward race coupled with three well-mannered finds. Taking second was Boatright's Texas Tornado, female setter owned by Terry Boatright and handled by James Kleeve of Outkast Kennels. Finishing in third was Bundy's Buckeye Molly, a female Llewellin setter owned by Chris Sellers and handled by Zach Erne of Chippewa Valley Kennels.
In the walking Puppy Stake, Missouri pro Justin Crook of Power House Kennels took first and second with pointers P B Hurrin Hoosier for owner Brian Stockrahn and Dark Rum Jasmine for owner Steven Burrus. Coming in third was May's Legacy of Justice, owned and handled by Ken Delong and is actually sired by this event's champion.
Thanks to the judges and everyone that helped to make this trial a success. In addition, thanks to our sponsors SportDog and Valu-Pak.
