The venue for the Jayhawk Open Shooting Dog Championship was the Westfall Ranch, located in the Flint Hills of southeast Kansas. The trial normally begins 24 hours after the Midwest Championship concludes. Weather conditions caused an extra day's delay. Snow, high wind, and freezing temperatures set the trial back. The members of the club appreciate Mr. Westfall for allowing the use of his property to host the trial. The Midwest, Jayhawk, and Sunflower Championships annually host their trials on these grounds. Bill has been a longtime supporter of local clubs, open and amateur championships, major circuit championships, and the National Championship at Ames.

Lynn Oxendine and T. J. Hidalgo judged the Championship, and Virgil Moore and Luke Topp judged the Derby. All four of these gentlemen have won championships, and the club was fortunate to obtain their services.

The judges named Touch's Steely Dan champion. Dan was handled by Virgil Moore for owner John Van Horn Jr. Dan ran on Course 1 and ran a forward race, going to all the appropriate objectives. He stood stylishly at 25 and displayed perfect manners for Moore to flush his birds. He finished the hour reaching to the front. Haneys Juggernaut was named runner-up. Shawn Kinkelaar handled Juggernaut for owners Zach Hilton and Dr. Tom Jackson. Juggernaut ran a forward race throughout the hour. He pointed a wild covey at 44 on the side hill in the big pasture. His manners at flush were beyond reproach. The weather changed for the derby with temperatures reaching near 90 degrees. The Derby placements were based on race. This year's Purina Top Shooting Dog Derby, Silver W Hot Pink, placed first. Pink is owned by Debbie Ozner and was handled by Shawn Kinkelaar. Hale's Southern Rock placed second and was handled by Curtis Teare. Third in the Derby was Up Town Girl Mondo, owned by Jay McKenzie and handled by Harold Gearhart.

Thanks to Purina for furnishing feed to the winners and access to the Purina Store for awards. Jay McKenzie, Luke Topp, and Walley Olson provided ATVs to assist in the running of the trial. Club president and trial chairman Randy Wilson prepares for the trial and runs a very successful one. Not only does he keep the trial running smoothly, but he also plans and prepares three meals a day for those in attendance. Harold Gearhart, Luke Topp, Garvin Collins, Walley Olson, and Trip Olson make up the rest of a great team.
