Nazareth Amateur DerbyS26

Amateur Derby (l-r): Jeff Currier, Larry King with Southbound Priscilla, Ernie Saniga with Bull Jangles, Darren Boyer with Bud, Alex Smith (judge), and Slate Newman.

The Nazareth Field Trial Club held its first amateur trial on May 16 at the Freeland Kennel Club outside of Weatherly, Pennsylvania. The weather could not have cooperated any better for the middle of May. The morning was cool and wet, perfect for scenting conditions. The grounds were in great shape this year, with the club members doing a lot of work to get them opened up. The dogs were able to stretch out along the edges while still being forced to hunt the many objectives. The grounds are a great place to run dogs, and we thank the club for letting us use them.

We had great help in putting on this event. Birds were plentiful on the course thanks to potential newcomer Matt Newman. Lunch was provided for everyone by Tiffani Smith and Sheila Hart. Most importantly, judges Dave McKay and Alex Smith judged the Derby, while Shane Knarr and Jeff Currier judged the Shooting Dog. Thank you all for your time and effort; we could not have done this without you. A big thank you to Purina and Lion Country Supply for sponsoring us; we could not have done it without you.

First place in the Amateur Derby was Southbound Priscilla, owned and handled by Larry King. Priscilla had three nice finds and a back with a beautiful race. She handled the course perfectly for Larry. Second was Bull Jangles, handled by Ernie Saniga and owned by Ernie and Karen Saniga. Jangles had two nice derby finds with a nice forward race.

First place in the Amateur Shooting Dog stake was Calico's Over The Top, handled by Brayden Smith. At just 10 years old, Brayden handled his dog like a veteran, scoring four finds and a back. Over The Top's race was to the front and always under the control of his handler. Second place went to Bull Finch. Ernie Saniga handled Finch perfectly to three finds. Her race was snappy and always up front. Southbound Hotdog Homer took third place. Owned by Linda Casey and handled by Alex Smith, Hotdog had three finds and an unproductive. Hotdog and Finch were braced together, complementing each other nicely.
