Result: Northern Bucks Bird Dog Club Fall Trial

Location: Clear Springs, Maryland

Post Date: Oct 15, 2021

Submitted By: David McKay

The Northern Bucks Bird Dog Club held its Fall trial this year at the Indian Spring WMA outside of Clear Springs, Md. We are very grateful to the Maryland DNR and the ground crew that mow and maintain the land.

Open Shooting Dog Winners. From left:. Ravenwood Throwing Smoke with Matt Basilone, Bad Bourbon with Gunner Boyer and Great River Dan with Marcus Ramseur. Behind: Judges Andy Bogar and Jameson Crandall. Amateur walking shooting dog winners youth stake competitiors

This trial is a collaboration between Gunner Boyer and myself. We could not host this trial without the help from Darren Boyer, hauling water, planting birds, and supplying horses. We also want to thank Liz Larsen and Chelsea Alexandra for their help supplying food for everyone. Many other people helped out as well, planting birds, and doing all that is required to keep everything moving smoothly.

We made some changes to the course and we aren't done yet, so look for improvements in the spring trial. Thank you to everyone who came out to run dogs. It was great to see old friends and make some new.

Our horseback stakes were run under the Southern Bird Hunters Association banner. We thank them for their support.

Judges in the Open stakes rode all day and gave each dog their full attention. Thank you, Jameson Crandall and Andy Bogar, for all your hard work.

We were glad to see New Jersey professional trainer, Matt Basilone, of Sunrise Kennels and a very nice string of dogs competing with quality amateur handlers in the open stakes including Gunner Boyer, Dave Parks, Bob Verderosa, Rob Hopkins, Marcus Ramseur and myself.

THE WINNERS

Matt Basilone was awarded first in the Open Shooting Dog with Ravenwood Throwing Smoke, pointer male owned by Joe Cincotta. Bad Bourbon took second place for owner-handler Gunner Boyer. Third was awarded to Great River Dan owned by Bob Bergen and handled by Marcus Ramseur. Scenting was tough this day and these three dogs proved to be strong bird finders and looked good while doing it.

The Open Derby was won by Jolene Jolene, aka Jelly, handled and owned by myself. Second went to Harbour City Express, handled by Marcus Ramseur for owner Thomas Brigman. Third was awarded to Triple Nickel Carbon Copy, handled by Matt Basilone for owner Robert and Linda Bergen. All these winning Derbies showed the judges their potential to be future champions.

The Southern Bird Hunters Association trial continued Saturday with our Amateur Horseback Stakes. The Shooting Dog stake was judged by two longtime field trialers and bird hunters, Bart Hastings and Ben Dillard. These two gentlemen stepped up when needed most Thank you both!

First in the Amateur Shooting Dog was L F Dialing Samantha for owner and handler Larry King. Second was awarded to Storm Rider's Shadow for owner and handler Roger Dvorak. Taking home third place was Little Wing Inked Up for owner and handler Bo Mamounis. This stake contained many quality performances and we would like to thank all handlers for competing.

In the Amateur Derby, Jolene Jolene took home the blue ribbon for a second time this weekend. Second was awarded to Newfield's Easy Rider owned and handled by Bo Mamounis. Third was Boyer's Running Buck Wild. This Derby stake was highly contested with many good performances. Thank you to our judges, Bart Hastings and Jameson Crandall.

Saturday afternoon featured a Youth Stake. There were not many entries, but we had a group of four very excited young kids that had a blast with their dogs. Piper, Colten, Annie, and June, the youngest age 4, and the oldest age 8. This trial was less of a competition and more just simple fun with four children riding horses and flushing birds in front of their pointers. We hope to do more with youth stakes as these kids get older and more competitive with the hope some other youngsters join us. We would like to thank the Southern Bird Hunters Association for their support with this fixture.

Sunday morning we switched gears and ran our walking trial under the U. S. Complete Shooting Dog Association banner. The future of field trials necessitates collaboration, and in this area we are seeing more clubs offering both walking and horseback stakes during the same weekend. It is great to see these joint efforts grow and more people get involved with both walking and horseback.

We had a very competitive Walking Shooting Dog Stake. We ran the walking course different than past years, which was well received, giving ample opportunity for bird work throughout the course. It flowed naturally and gave the handlers many opportunities to show their dogs.

Judges were Roger Dvorak and Bo Mamounis, two successful trialers that are always willing to help, thank you both immensely. First place was awarded to Super Storm, with No Limit close behind in second, both dogs owned and handled by Thor Kain. Third was Huckleberry's Lucky Penny for handler and owner Dean Avillion. Honorable mention was our only short-tailed dog of the stake, a very nice Brittany owned and handled by Andy Bogar.

Thank you to all who came out and supported us We hope to see you all again this spring!
