The Region 1 Amateur Shooting Dog Championship commenced Friday, October 15, in East Windsor, Conn., at the Dr. John E. Flaherty Field Trial Area with Judges Jason Smit of Montgomery, N.Y., and Dr. Bill Orlando of Massena, N.Y., mounted and ready for action. Jason and Bill are experienced pointing dog judges and we are most appreciative they accepted the assignment.
Under the joint effort of the Dr. John E. Flaherty Field Trial Clubs Association, and its devoted President Dick Frawley, as well as the State of Connecticut Department of Energy & Environmental Protection, Eastern District Wildlife Biologist Ann Kilpatrick, the grounds were in as good of condition as could be expected considering the record rain fall received this year. We are thankful and appreciate this continued joint effort.
The first day of running proved to be difficult. Despite the fact there were tons of birds, only one dog of the ten that ran made it around. Pointer male Harwich Indian Creek Buck running in the first brace, handled by myself, John Olfson, had a nice five-find effort. His classy big forward race was very good; however, I knew there were many very good dogs yet to run.
Pointer male Thomas Adirondack Turbo was named champion. Turbo ran a hard- charging, forward race with many perfect finds. He always turned up in the right place for his handler and owner Jim Thomas.
Turbo is a multiple champion, having won the 2020 Amateur Pheasant Championship with Jim. He's an Open Champion as well. Happened to be present when breeder Rich Giuliano delivered Turbo as a young pup. The breeding has proven to be very successful; his littermate brother, Pure Confidence, is a multiple champion and reigning NBHA Dog of The Year.
Pointer male, The Secret, was named runner-up champion. His three-find big forward race was very classy. This three-year-old first year shooting dog is very light on his feet, gorgeous on point, and a lot of fun to watch. He was handled by Brian Sanchez and is owned by Great River Kennels and Lisa Pollock.
We are very grateful to Dick Bembeneck for donating his saddle which was beautifully refurbished by George Doyle, together with a very nice girth strap donated by Linda Casey, was awarded to the Jim Thomas for winning the Championship. The runner-up Brian Sanchez was awarded a hand-crafted George Doyle saddle bag.
We thank Alex and Tiffany Smith of Calico Kennels and Bill and Muriel Primm owners of 2020 Champion Calico's Guns N Roses for hosting Saturday's dinner.
Many thanks to Greg Blair and Purina for their continued support. We are proud to award Pro Plan Sport to the winners. We all appreciate Purina's effort and support of all sporting breeds, they are far and away second to none! In fact I know of no one in our New England group of field trailers who does not feed Pro Plan.
