FORKED RIVER, N. J. -- The Region 2 Brittany Champagne Memorial Shooting Dog Championship was held following the North Jersey Brittany Club's spring field trial on April 8. The Championship was held for the first time at the 825-acre Greenwood Wildlife Management Area in Forked River, N. J. These grounds are in the pine barrens of New Jersey and have been groomed and maintained for field trials.

Although quail are not native to this area, club members Joe Luisi and Rick Taglang did an amazing job of setting up large covey locations with callers and daily feed. There were no birdless dogs during this week-long event.

Thank you to Water and Wings for sponsoring an Italian catered happy hour from Varriales Pizza Saturday evening.

A winner's dinner hosted by Tom and Robin Maule was held Monday evening to celebrate the 2018 Region 2 Champion Shailorville's Tucker. After a delicious chicken parmesan catered dinner, the championship committee presented the beautiful painting of Tucker by Herb Park. A custom Herb Park painting will be awarded to this year's winner as well.

North Jersey would like to express sincere gratitude to Nutrena/Loyall for their generous monetary and food donations that helped make this event possible. All placing dogs were awarded with dog food as well as multiple bags that were donated for the silent auction.

Doug Ackroyd donated to the silent auction a beautiful windcatcher that when the wind hit the propeller the Brittanys would run.

To all our amazing North Jersey members that stepped up and assisted by making this event run flawlessly you are greatly appreciated. Without our great team we would never have been able to get it done.

Thank you to our championship judges Dave McKay of Perkasie, Pa., and Joe Petroski of Suffolk, Va.

The Championship began at 8:00 a. m. Monday morning with the temperature in the low 70s and 10 mph winds.

Marjo's Fille De La Bretagne (Brie/owned by Bob Goldman and handled by John Perry) was braced with her dam, Marjo's Cruzan Rovan (owned and handled by Joe Luisi). Both dogs were hard driving dogs that set the pace for the stake. "Brie's" run was a more consistent wide range shooting dog for the entire hour with a short absence at 30. Brie had four stylish covey finds as well as a back and a divided find. Cruzan covered ground swiftly working along the edges with five finds and one divided find. Their performances earned them third and fourth in the Championship.

As the temperatures continued to rise reaching 82 by the afternoon, many of the dogs felt the effects. Dogs all achieved multiple covey finds but would slow by the end of the hour.

The champion came from the first brace Tuesday morning when temperatures were in the 60s.

Hi Proof Hooch, owned by Paul and Ginny Snyder of Sellersville, Pa., and handled by John Perry, broke away running strong to the front. Hooch was found standing staunchly on a covey along the dirt road. Hooch's pattern gradually became wider and required scouting assistance. Hooch had four more covey finds, an unproductive and a stop to flush. By the end of the hour, Hooch continued to drive hard and at time was shown to the front.

Runner-up Kip's Bay Dark'N Stormy Maddie, owned and handled by John Kipp of Warwick, N. Y., was in the 8th brace. Maddie is a quick dog that has a very forward pattern. This animated bitch maintains a moderate range and keeps your attention as she works hard hunting the edges. Maddie had fivestylish covey finds.
