RICHMOND, KY. -- The Central Kentucky Field Trial Club's 2018 Purina Amateur Top Shooting Dog and Top Amateur All-Age Award and National Amateur Invitational Points Trial ran on the Miller Welch Wildlife Management Area, Berea, Ky., March 2-3.
Terry Boatright of Richmond, Ky., and Rich Meadows of Somerset, Ky., attentively judged and their decisions were well received.
Taking first in the Amateur Shooting Dog was Chase (Traveler's Split Rail), setter male owned and handled by Greg Sand of Hill City, Kan. Chase had a high on both ends find at 30 by the Round Woods Crossing. His big lots of energy run showed good ground movement, a willingness to stay to the front and manners on his birds. Chase was scouted by Buster Tucker. Little More Shine, Irish setter female, took second with a good find at 50 exhibiting a forward shooting dog race. Shine is owned and handled by Dr. Kristine Hammons of Berea, Ky. Tim Hammons' Irish setter Roses Are Red placed third with a back and a strong forward race with no birds.
The Amateur All-Age Stake had eight entries, short of the required 16 needed for Purina points to count. Matt Pendergest's pointer female Pendy's Good Grace won first with a very impressive well handled all-age race and two covey finds. Second was Dialed In, pointer male owned and handled by Jim Pendergest. He had three finds with a good race. Third place Buckeye White Knight, setter male owned by Edward Teiga and Bill Brown and handled by Bill Brown, had one find and three backs.
Little More Shine earned first in the Open Derby, competing with a little over an hour's rest after placing in the Amateur Shooting Dog. Shine had a faster, bigger, stronger race in the Derby than in the Shooting Dog. Mr. Lincoln (Abe), Charlie Turner's pointer male, came in second showing lots of potential but no bird work. S C Miss Behaving, Tim Hammons' Irish setter female, took third with a quick snappy forward race but no bird work.
Appreciation to Purina for the continuing sustaining support.
Also to Donna Boatright for her rookie time driving the dog wagon. She was an old pro by the end of the trial thanks to Charlie Turner and Vernon Vance's ride-alongs and tips. Buster wrote two pages of instructions that Donna said helped a great deal.
