Result: Ohio Red Setter Field Trial Club

Location: Rochester Twp, Pennsylvania

Post Date: May 7, 2021

Submitted By: Allen Fazenbaker

The Ohio Red Setter Field Trial Club ran its annual spring trial May 7-8 at the iconic Beaver Valley Pointer and Setter Club. Normally a Saturday-Sunday event, this year we moved the date forward a day to avoid conflict with Mother's Day.

This was the first time the ORSFTC had run in two years; the COVID-19 pandemic cancelled this, as well as many trials last year. Hopefully, as the year progresses, the trials will continue to pick up and a more normal schedule will commence!

The Beaver Valley grounds are well known to those in the Ohio-Pennsylvania region. First established in 1949, these grounds have been in continuous use for field trials since that time. The ORSFTC is grateful to the Board of Directors of the Beaver Valley Club for making these grounds available for our sport.

Thanks to our slate of judges who brought a wealth of experience to the weekend. Tim McClurg, Kara Thatcher, Allen Fazenbaker, Meredith Mays, Brian Ralph, and Eric Munden spent some long hours (and wet ones, given the weather) in the saddle to evaluate the entries. Thank you!

Also, a huge thank you to all the helping hands who made this trial a success: Joe Camissa, Norm Meeder, Justin Mason, Deb Fazenbaker, and others this reporter probably missed pitched in to keep the trial moving.

Purina, a stalwart sponsor of the Pennsylvania Walking Shooting Dog Association, was also a supporter, and we thank Purina for their continued support.

We also wish to thank our professional handlers who entered dogs, including Hall-of-Famer Dave Hughes, Mark Hughes, Nick Mellon, Robert Ecker, and Zack Erne. These folks are essential to the success of our sport, and much appreciated.

Most importantly, thank you to all the participants who entered dog. We had a total of 71 entries, a great start to begin moving forward after a challenging year with the pandemic.

This trial was a U. S. Complete and Pennsylvania Walking Shooting Dog Association points trial. This weekend we ran both horseback and walking stakes. Participants came from as far away as Tennessee and Indiana! All winners received a dog collar or leather lead to take home with them. And the winners are...

WALKING STAKES

In the Open Walking Puppy, taking the blue was Foxy Lady Sadie, a fast moving red setter handled by Weston Wheeler, who is the youngest person this reporter has ever seen handle a dog, at the ripe old age of 5 years old! Weston hit the whistle, sang to his dog, and handled her around the course like a pro! B K Lapaloma Blanca, pointer female, took the red, handled by Brooke Lanning. Mac's Trump Card, setter male, rounded out the placements for his handler Thomas Butts.

The Red setter clan continued their winning streak in the Open Walking Derby, with Full Red Afterburn taking the win for her handler Mike Fox. Close behind was Teen Spirit, setter female handled by Robert Ecker, who also garnered third with Glassilaun Parabellum, setter female.

The hotly contested Open Walking Shooting Dog was won in convincing style by Backcountry Missy, pointer female that showed a pleasing forward race with impeccable bird work for her owner and handler Chris Catanzarite. Missy was challenged for the spot by Suemac's Sashay, pointer female owned by the Roger McPherson family, and handled by Mark Hughes to take second. Hughes rounded out the placements with Double Deuce Zeke, pointer male owned by Doug McMillen. The judges noted that the stake showed a good number of high quality shooting dogs, and it was a quality stake.

Saturday started the day with the Horseback Open Derby, where the veteran handler Tim McClurg handled Joe's Little Katana, a nice running pointer female, to a first place finish for her owner Joe Berardi. Mac's Danny Boy took the No. 2 spot for McClurg, and Brian Ralph finished out the placements with his setter male Ralphy's Finn B.

The Open Shooting Dog had a quality stake. Grouse Trails Tuscarora took the blue for his handler Mark Hughes. Close behind was Backcountry Bruiser, pointer male owned and handled by Chris Catanzarite. Norm Meeder's setter male I'll Be Back came back for his handler Mark Hughes to take the No. 3 spot.

National Red Setter Field Trial Club former President Jack Carter was an honorable and respected man not only in Tennessee but throughout the East Coast, where he campaigned his beloved red setters, and was an active and stalwart supporter of the Sullivan County Tennessee Bird Dog Club. So, it was especially fitting that Bobby Phillips of Jonesborough, Tenn., who was a dear friend of Jack Carter and also very active in the Tennessee Club, won the Amateur Shooting Dog Stake with his pointer female Bob's Elhew Fancy. Bob was honored to have a part in the Jack Carter Memorial stake. Chris Catanzarite's Backcountry Missy grabbed her second placement of the weekend, garnering second place, and Sarah Gomes' pointer female Caliber Peak Storm Warning rounded out the placements, handled by Doug McMillen.

The Ohio Red Setter Field Trial Club is devoted to the Purest Challenge... the promotion and improvement of the Red setter as a class shooting dog and hunting companion. There is no better way to improve our breed than competing in all-breed stakes, and that is why this club exists. We appreciate the opportunity to compete with other breeds, and we appreciate the good sportsmanship that was demonstrated this weekend. Hope to see you in a few months for our fall renewal.
