The Lake States Field Trial Club has not hosted a spring trial since 2017. Last year all was cancelled due to COVID, and 2018 and 2019 were cancelled due to bad weather.

This 2021 trial, a Purina sponsored event, was welcomed. And this year we were treated to great spring weather and not too warm temperatures for our May trial.

Being Mother's Day weekend, we started our first stake -- Open Shooting Dog -- on Friday, May 7, on course No. 1. We drew an outstanding thirty (30) dogs for our John Hadaway Cover Dog Classic, with Bob Wheelock and Frank Illijanic sitting in judgment.

THE WINNERS

First place was awarded to Travel Alert (Buster), owned and handled by Harold Holmes. Buster ran a hard, fast and strong race. He was most consistent and was always in the right spot. He showed well, predominantly forward throughout the whole brace, sticking a grouse on course No. 3 near the end. A pretty nice piece of bird work!

Second went to Back Creek Lucy, owned by Steve Graham and handled by Richard Hollister, Sr. Lucy ran fast, kept busy and forward, hitting all the places you would want to see the dog. Showing forward when asked to, she was very responsive to her handler. She had a beautiful find with three grouse, standing firm to wing and shot on course No. 2. Coming in third was Titanium Jacksin, owned by Doug Baumann and handled by Bruce Minard. Jacksin ran a solid race on course No. 6, with a nice woodcock find at time.

It was a good day and the judges had adequate dogs with bird work to get the job done.

Saturday morning we kicked off the Dell Todd Open Derby Classic with Diane Wheelock and Shane Baxter in the saddle. They had the opportunity to take a look at 26 great looking young dogs with temperatures again not as hot as we expected.

The judges placed Dive Bar Beauty Queen (Dixie) first. Dixie is owned by Brad Holt and was handled by Bruce Minard. Dixie was fast and snappy with a consistent forward go, start to finish on course No. 10. She seemed to be in all the right places with two woodcock finds. The first find was on a hillside just in earshot of her bell, with a very lengthy walk up. She stood steady for the flush.

Baker River's Mountain Man took second with two nice woodcock finds. He is owned by Bradley Roth and was handled by Marc Forman. Handling well to the front and standing steady for the flush, his second find was in a thick aspen cut with a bit of a lengthy search to find him. Finishing with a strong forward move to the front and was seen again hunting the edge on course No. 5 when time was called. Third was Sutter's Backwoods Rumble, owned by Paula Giulitto and handled by Richard Hollister, Sr. Rumble also had a strong forward run, being in and out of bell range. Rumble had one grouse find midway on course 11, followed by a strong move to the front, showing great independence.

After the Derbies were down, Mike Singleton and Shane Haskin had the opportunity to take a look at seven fine looking setters up on the Puppy Course. It was duly noted that these pups were all top notch, all of which could have won on any given day. Not a bad one in the bunch.

Taking first in the Bob Doran Open Puppy Classic was E J Jonesy, owned by Taylor Kagley and handled by Scott Chaffee. Jonesy was fast moving and flashy, keeping forward with nice big casts, finishing strong on a warm day. North Bay's Tennessee Rye took second, owned and handled by Brandon Short. Rye has had a good go up here in the woods this spring. He showed well again this day, staying forward and running strong. Third was Dun Roven Briar, owned by Richard Hollister, Sr. and handled by Richard Hollister, Jr., 13-year-old veteran trailer with many wins under his belt. Ricky handled Briar well, keeping him to the front and allowing him to do his thing. Congratulations to all the winners.

Bob Doran Open Puppy Classic Winners

A successful trial can only be accomplished with the help with all involved. We would like to thank Bryan Wood who was back as our stakes manager, along with our horse wranglers Rich, Jenny, Ricky and Randi Hollister.

George and Marilyn Ferguson again regaled us with their most excellent muffins and cookies, along with a welcomed cup of coffee.

We sincerely thank all those who also marshaled braces, moved cars and offered their help in all the right ways.

A huge thank you to Purina for their contribution of dog food and for their continued sponsorship.
