WORTHAM, TEX. -- The Dallas Pointer Setter Club met April 6-7 to celebrate the memory and legacy of two Texas field trialers.

Bob Baylis was a patron of the sport for the entirety of his field trial life. Bob gave unselfishly and worked to improve Texas trials. Tony Terrell was a trainer and handler of exceptional ability. Tony brought national attention to many Texas dogs.

The trial is held in Bob's memory and the Saturday night fish fry is a continuation of an event started and hosted by Tony. Both men are deservedly members of the Region 7 Hall of Fame. They are missed and fondly remembered. We were fortunate to have Tony's son Scoot and his wife Danna attend the fish fry.

We returned to the Four Corners lease near Mexia, Tex., for this renewal. It is a fine test of shooting dogs and thanks to the lease holders the grounds were in excellent shape. Bird work was the standard of the trial with the dogs carding 29 finds. Some dogs were successful, some not so much.

The weather, as it has been all season, was a problem. Both Shooting Dog Stakes were delayed until nearly 10:00 a. m. by fog; the Amateur (shooting dog) Derby was held until 4:00 p. m. due to rain, and the Open (shooting dog) Derby was cancelled. An ill-fated end to the Texas field trial season that saw four or more trials cancelled due to weather.

Royce Gustafson and Conrad Plevnic manned the dog wagons. Maryann Gustafson and Bobby Collier ran the kitchen. Many thanks for their hard work.

Our judges, Alex Jacocks and Jack Schinnerer, slipped over the Texas border, left Oklahoma and gave their best efforts. Their judgments were well thought out and were received with applause.

In the Amateur Shooting Dog, Great White (Pete), pointer male owned and handled by Buck Neil, set the standard for the stake in the first brace with a powerful forward race. Pete used the cover and wind to best advantage and treated us to four well spaced finds, each with high style and outstanding manners. Oakleaf's Quite Man (Murphy), Irish setter male owned and handled by Jim Baker, placed second, and Stormy, pointer male owned and handled by Steve Schiber, was third. Second and third were hotly contested. Running in the fifth brace this pair traded finds and backs the entire time. At the barn Murphy was found pointing with Stormy backing. At the oak grove Murphy was found on point. At the cross fence before the woods Stormy scored, while Murphy was on birds well ahead in the woods. Back together, at time both dogs were out of sight and found with Stormy pointing and Murphy backing. Both dogs displayed excellent style and manners.

In the Amateur (shooting Dog) Derby, the Rowan family -- Shawn, Angie, Kate and Tucker -- were the force in this stake. First was pointer female Cypress Church Junebug which ran a mature, forward race that showed promise of greatness. Pointer male Rowan's Pena Creek Ike was well forward and hunted hard. Third was setter female C C Erin O'Shamrock, owned by James and Brenda Cardwell and handled by Steve Schiber. Braced with Ike, Erin gave as good as she got. This was a nice brace to watch with both dogs showing potential.

The Open Shooting Dog winner was Highpoint Blazin Meg, Brittany female handled by Ben Kuykendall. Meg is very fast and always forward. She is fun to watch and exceptional on her game. Meg hits her birds hard and she nailed them twice. Each time her location, style and manners were excellent. Second was Hard Rock Spider Man, owned by George Gage and handled by Charlie Collier. Spider scored three times. Each time he was high and tight and his manners were acceptable. His race was well forward and hunting. Third was Oakleaf's Quite Man, the writer's Irish setter. "Murphy" ran well to the front and hunted hard. He scored three times with outstanding style and acceptable manners.

The Open Derby was cancelled due to inclement weather.
