ARDMORE, OKLA. -- The Woodward County Shooting Dog Association Classics drew a total of 54 dogs and ten Derbies. All are Purina Awards points stakes.

Purina was our dog food sponsor and we are very grateful for their gifts of dog food for all the winners and generous help with the advertising. Purina's Greg Blair was a big help in seeing everything was done.

We had the best of judges, which is necessary to have a successful trial.

Dr. Alex Jacocks and Dr. Robert Rankin, both from Edmond, Okla., have had a lot of experience in judging, several championships and many other trials. They rode hard and were very attentive to all the dogs.

Weather was cool in the morning and the temperatures climbed to almost 80 in the afternoon. Birds were hard to come by. Makes me wonder what is going on here on these grounds.

THE WINNERS AND OTHERS

Jacked Up Jasper was the star of the show. Some years ago Virgil Moore, his handler, had trouble keeping him. Not anymore. He runs big to the front and comes back looking for Virgil. Jasper had a way-off limb find handled with high style and perfect manners to win the Oklahoma Shooting Dog Classic.

In the M. F. Ferguson Classic, he had the best race of the stake, but Hale's Southern Touch pointed a bird and won it, a class dog which also placed in the companion stake.

We had other dogs that did a good job on the grounds, but no birds.

Steve Hurdle is a classy guy who runs really classy dogs and does a good job showing them. He placed two dogs here and had others that were close.

We had two other handlers who showed good dogs. Tom Woods, a very nice guy to be around, had some really nice dogs, and does an outstanding job showing them. Justin Crook from Missouri is a young guy who you will be hearing more about, has good dogs, and shows them well.

Broadway Hot was doing a good job until he got tangled up with an armadillo.

Frank Ford and his lovely wife came up from Granbury, Tex., and both were a big help. Frank drove the dog wagon, knows the grounds, and was Johnny on the spot. Couldn't have run it without him. Elene helped my wife Donna. They had food ready for us and cooked some really tasty hamburgers on the grill. The twosome worked hard and we thank them for their efforts.

These are really good stakes and it's a shame we didn't have some more birds.

We appreciate everyone who attended and helped make this a successful trial. A special thanks to Virgil Moore and Shawn Kinkelaar for attending and helping with a number of things.

We missed our president of this club, Gary Williams. He does so much to help that everybody wanted to know where he was. Gary's wife had some medical issues and he had to stay home to take care of her. He is a great guy, helps everyone with a smile on his face. Wasn't the same without him.
