BEREA, KY. -- This year's running of Rolling Fork Bird Dog Club was sadly marked in the beginning of the week the trial was held by the passing of Donnie Mullins, local field trialer of many years.

The weather put a mark on the running also. Due to a winter weather advisory the horseback stakes were postponed. Also, due to the weather, there had to be made changes to the judging panel: the judges were Mike Stovall of Ky., longtime AKC and UKC judge, and Magda Lear of Kentucky.

The trial started Saturday, January 29, with snow on the ground and freezing temperatures; despite sunny skies the temperature did not rise much above freezing the whole day. On Sunday the sun increased the temperature to low-40s and by the end of the day most of the snow was gone.

Thankfully, the grounds have enough cover to plant birds even with few inches of snow fallen. All the adult dogs and most of the Derbies and puppies had at least one bird contact.

THE WINNERS

First place in Amateur Shooting Dog (seven entries) was awarded to Brittany male K Del's Eagle Magnum Hotshot with two finds and a nice race. Second was Brittany female K Del's Chance to Soar with three nice finds and solid hunting. Both are owned and handled by Kenny Delong of Michigan. Third was earned by setter female Coal Camp's Annie with a divided find, handled by Adam Thomas, owned by Jim Humphrey of Kentucky.

The best performing Amateur Derby was Bang Bang's Longshot, setter male owned and handled by Scott Luther of North Carolina with nice birdwork (three finds) and hunting all available cover. Second was May's Legacy of Justice, pointer male owned and handled by Kenny Delong. This nice youngster, still a puppy, had almost broke birdwork (three finds) and good ground cover. He also won first in Amateur Puppy.

The Open Derby drew seven entries. The winner was very nice setter female Boatright's Texas Tornado with solid birdwork (three finds) and thoroughly hunting the cover. Owner is Terry Boatright of Kentucky and handler James Kleve of Kentucky. Second was earned for nice outreaching hunting by pointer male Four Rivers Impulse Buy, owned and handled by Holly Hatfield of Kentucky. Third was awarded to previously placed May's Legacy of Justice (K. Delong), with three solid finds.

Open Puppy had six starters. First place won by never failing pointer May's Legacy of Justice (K. Delong). Second placed RR's Bluegrass Unbridled, pointer female (H. Hatfield) hunted and handled very well. Third was Dark Rum Jasmine, pointer female (S. Burns of Oklahoma), handled by J. Crook of Missouri for a reaching hunting.

Open Walking Shooting Dog started on Sunday morning. There were eight really nice dogs competing and judges had taken their time for final decision on placements.

First was awarded to setter male Guns Pistol Pete (C. Tackett, owner; J. Crook, handler) for methodical cover of grounds and four well handled finds. Second went to Brittany male K Del's Eagle Magnum Hotshot (K. Delong, owner and handler) for big run and three nice finds. Third was pointer male Unfinished Business (J. Gaines, owner; J. Crook, handler). This really nice dog had six finds with one relocation, but covered less grounds then his other competitors.

Horseback stakes followed the Walking Open Shooting Dog Stake. By that time the weather was spectacular, sunny and low 40s. Unfortunately, one owner had to scratch his enrtries since he could not safely pull his trailer out of his still snowy driveway.

Ten dogs competed in the Open Shooting Dog horseback stake. The first two placed dogs ran in a brace together. First place went to pointer male Unfinished Business (J. Gaines of Oklahoma, owner; J. Crook, handler) with four finds. Second was setter male Shepherd's Choice (R. Rogers, owner and handler) with two finds and two backs. Both dogs covered the grounds nicely. Third was pointer female Pineview Sally (J. Hearnsberger of Louisiana; J. Crook, handler) with a big race, one find and an unproductive.

The last stake was horseback Open Derby. Seven youngsters were testing their hunting skills. The best on the day was pointer male P B Mr. Bojangles (B. Stockrahm of Indiana; J. Crook). Bo covered the whole grounds yet handled well. Second was awarded to setter female Shepherd's Anna (R. Rogers, owner and handler) with exceptional drive and desire to find birds, but will need some work on handling the birds and herself. Third was a nice setter male Cactus Jet Juice for more mature work, but covering less ground.

Despite the weather the trial went on smoothly and the dogs and the handlers had a great time. At the end of the trial it did not seem that cold.

I want to thank everyone for coming and running their dogs. Very big thanks to our bird planters Brian Stockrahm and Anna Stovall; they did a great job considering the snowy conditions.

Also thanks to the state of Kentucky for letting the Miller Welch Central Kentucky Wildlife Area to be used for field trialing, and to the Kentucky Fish and Wildlife and to Kentucky Field Trial Association for grooming the grounds for good trials.
