The Spruce Brook spring trial was held May 27-29, at the John Flaherty field trial grounds East Windsor, Conn. It had been dry for the last few weeks so the first day running was direr than normal. That changed quickly with rain on Friday night and Saturday afternoon.
At this time, Ou would like to thank our judges Alene LeVasseur and Tom Tracy for judging the Open All-Age, Gene Casale, Jr., and John Malone Open Restricted Shooting Dog, Alene LeVasseur and John Malone Open Derby, Brian Sanchez and Dave O'Brien Open Shooting Dog and Bill Bonnetti and John Stolgitis for the one-hour Amateur Shooting Dog. A special thank you to all, the placements were well received.
Friday night dinner Shepard Pie and lasagna was provided by Erin and John Stolgitis. Saturday night Jayne Fogarty and Bill Bonnetti made a turkey dinner with all the side dishes, Jayne also made all the lunches. Everyone at the trial was provided with special meals and everyone left full.
A cake and ice cream for Matt Basilone to celebrate his 40th birthday was the dessert Saturday night. Happy birthday Matt.
The Open All-Age started things off on Friday under favorable skies. Mike Tracy was the handler for all three placements. John Ivester dog Raag's Rich and Rare was awarded first place with a strong forward race and one find. Mark Janic's dog South Point Hog Wild was second with a good race and two finds, third was Answered Prayers owned by Linder, McDonald and Hollander.
The next stake was the Open Restricted Shooting Dog. First place was B K Iron Clad owned and handled by Brian Sanchez Clad ran good searching race with three finds. Second was Miller's Flowers and Lace handled by Mike Tracy was attractive moving and on point, third place was Iron Will's Raging Bull handled by Matt Basilone with a good race and two finds.
The Open Derby was won by Miller's Special Cinderella, she applied herself well to the course and had three finds.
The Open Shooting Dog Stake started Friday afternoon and was completed on Saturday. Tim Cavanaugh's dog Little Miss Margaret handled by John Stolgitis took home the blue with a good ground race and four finds, second was Gary Traverse dog Fort River Lucky Charm handled by Matt Basilone he had two finds, second was Gary Traverse dog Fort River Lucky Charm handled by Matt Basilone he had two fins and a back. Third place went to South Point Hogg Wild. The judges stated that it was a very competitive stake with many good performances.
The one-hour Amateur Shooting Dog Stake start was delayed due to thunderstorms in the area. The stake started on Sunday morning under clear skies. The entry was small but had many good performances. Great River Yellow Stone owned and handled by Brian Sanchez was first he used all the country had multiple finds and looked good on all his finds. Joe Lordi's Bittersweet War Cry was second, he ran a good race and was rewarded witih four finds. Calico's Over The Top rounded pit the placements with four finds and a pleasing race.
